Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy will use an Innovation Award in 2016-17 to create culturally responsive classrooms that foster meaningful relationships and increase feelings of support and safety.
Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy is facing the challenge of providing experiences for all students in their school to feel supported and successful. When looking at the results from last year’s SBAC, a high percentage of African American and Latino students are not scoring proficient in both ELA and Math. In addition, the data shows that 83% of student referrals are for African American students. Parent engagement is also a focus area for Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy in order to be more consistent with the student body. To address this challenge, Harvey Milk strives to create a culturally responsive classroom where educators have meaningful relationships with their students, parents are core partners in their child’s learning, and students learn in an environment that is safe socially, emotionally and physically.
