Dear MLK Families,

I hope this letter finds you happy, rested, and feeling energized to welcome our students back to school! I was able to enjoy a couple road trips with my wife and kids; one to Oregon and the other to Los Angeles to see friends and family and take in the local scenery and culture. I also had a milestone as a parent, as my 16-year-old traveled to Sevilla, Spain to study Spanish language and culture for a month.

For families new to our community, I’d like to introduce myself as MLK’s Principal. I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and have a lot of love for this place and the people that make it special.  This is my sixteenth year working in schools, my seventh year as an administrator at MLK, and my second year as Principal. I’m looking forward to another year of supporting our amazing MLK students, families, and staff! 

Preparing for School

Sleep

Over the summer, your child’s sleeping schedule may have shifted and no longer aligns with our school schedule. If that’s the case, please start getting your child back into a healthy sleeping habit a week before school starts. Middle school students need 8-10 hours of sleep each night. Encourage your students to turn off their devices at 8:00pm, be in bed with a book to read by 9:00pm, and asleep by 10:00pm.

Materials 

We want to teach our students to be responsible, which includes maintaining the materials they need to engage in school. Please make sure your child brings the following to school EVERYDAY. 

• Backpack 
• A binder with paper and dividers
• Pens and pencils
• Charged SFUSD Chromebook
• Water bottle
• A healthy snack (dried fruit, granola bar, nuts, etc…)
• Athletic shoes and appropriate clothing for PE (dark athletic shorts or sweatpants, light color athletic top), which can be kept in the PE locker, and taken home to wash regularly

Arrive on time

School starts at 9:30am, which means that students should be in their seats, ready to learn BEFORE 9:30am. When the bell rings at 9:30am, students are considered late. I recommend that students arrive by 9:15am, so students have plenty of time to get to class on time. 

Student Schedule

Student schedules can be seen on ParentVue and StudentVue by Friday, 8/16. Please remind your child to write down their schedule so they will know where to go on the first day of school!

Week One

Last school year at MLK, we worked with students to design the first week of school, which we are calling “Week One”. Week One will include students working on a community project in teams, students having fun with staff and their classmates, students celebrating their culture, a family event in the evening, and a field trip on Friday. The intention of our special schedule during Week One is to create a strong, positive culture at MLK which will lead to more engaged students and better learning outcomes. If you are interested in learning about the creation of Week One, much of the design process can be seen in these slides. 

The first week of school is SO IMPORTANT to set the tone and culture for the rest of the school year- and we will all have a role to play to make Week One successful. On Monday, 8/19, your student will be bringing home a field trip permission form to go on a field trip with their grade-level to a local park on Friday of that week. Please make sure you sign and return the permission slip by Thursday of that week. All students should participate in the Friday field trip. 

We would love parents to  volunteer or participate in the Week One activities on Thursday and/or Friday (click this link to learn more and sign-up to participate and/or volunteer), AND please mark your calendar for our Family Culture and Potluck Night on Thursday 8/22 from 5:30- 7:00 at MLK;  there will be food, music, and performances. The event is a potluck, so bring some food to share that represents your family’s culture!

MLK Policy Reminders

Phones

MLK is a PHONE FREE school. All students will be issued a phone pouch and must keep their phone locked in their phone pouch during the school day. Any phone that is seen during the school day, which is not in a phone pouch, will be confiscated and held for a parent/guardian to pick up at their convenience. If you need to contact your child during the school day, please call the main office at 415-330-1500. Students can request a pass to use the phone in our counseling office when needed. Please do not text or call your child during the school day.

Dress Code 

• Clothing, jewelry, and personal items shall be free of obscene, violent, or sexually suggestive images or words, or which promotes the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or other illegal activity.
• Students must have footwear that is safe and appropriate for the activity they are engaging in. 
• Clothes shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments. See-through tops or bare abdomens are prohibited. Garments exposing the entire thigh or the buttocks are prohibited.

Students in violation of our dress code will be asked to fix the issue. If they cannot fix the issue, parents will be contacted to bring clothing for the student. 

Bikes, scooters, and skateboards

Students that ride to school on a bike, scooter, or skateboard are required to lock their transportation in our bike and scooter rack. If your student rides a bike, please make sure they have a bike lock. Students riding scooters and skateboards will need a padlock to lock onto the scooter rack. As a reminder, Helmets are required for children 18 years and under on bikes, non-motorized scooters, skateboards, and roller or in-line skates, under California Vehicle Code 21212. Students are not allowed to ride their bike or skateboard on campus. 

Food 

• Breakfast and lunch are free for all students.
• This school year, students will need to enter their meal pin number in order to receive lunch. Students with an email on file will receive an email the week of August 5th from “SFUSD Student Nutrition Services” containing their individual Meal PIN. Students can also scan the barcode on the back of their student ID to receive their meal. 
• Food deliveries to MLK are prohibited. We cannot accept food deliveries from services like Uber Eats, DoorDash, etc… Any food deliveries that arrive at MLK will be intercepted and held until the end of the school day. Parents are always welcome to drop food off for their child if needed.

• 8/17, Saturday: 6th Grade Family Welcome Day. 11am-2pm at MLK MS.
• 8/19, Monday: First Day of school. There will be a special orientation assembly for all New-to-MLK students and their families on the first day of school from 9:30am-10:30am in the cafeteria.
• 8/22, Thursday: MLK Family Culture Celebration Potluck from 5:30pm to 7:00pm
• 9/2, Monday: Labor Day- No School.

Update on SFUSD “Resource Alignment Initiative”

You may be aware that SFUSD is making changes in order to address a budget deficit. In the next year, SFUSD will begin the process of closing, co-locating, and merging some schools. On 9/18, Superintendent Dr. Matt Wayne will share which schools will be affected by the changes. While I am confident that MLK will not be closed, co-located, or merged, I understand that our families have students in elementary schools that may be affected, which will cause stress and anxiety. I will share information as soon as I get it to keep everyone in our community up to date. Here is a link to more information about the Resource Alignment Initiative.

We are starting this school year strong, with a full team of teachers, and an abundance of opportunities and resources for our students, families, and staff! I’m looking forward to greeting students and families on the first day of school, which is Monday, 8/19. School starts at 9:30am, and please help your child get into the habit of arriving 15 minutes early every day so they are on time and prepared to start their day as a safe, respectful, responsible King Kid!

準備上學

睡眠

整個暑假，您孩子的睡眠時間表可能會發生變化，不再與我們學校的時間表一致。如果是這種情況，請在開學前一周開始讓您的孩子恢復健康的睡眠習慣。中學生每晚需要8-10小時的睡眠。鼓勵學生在晚上 8點 關閉電子產品，在晚上 9點 前上床看書，並在晚上 10點 前入睡。

自行車、踏板車和滑板

騎自行車、踏板車或滑板上學的學生必須將其交通工具鎖在我們的自行車和踏板車架上。如果您的學生騎自行車，請確保他們有自行車鎖。騎踏板車和滑板的學生需要一把掛鎖來鎖定踏板車架。提醒一句， 18 歲及以下兒童需配戴頭盔，根據加州車輛法規 21212，學生不得在校園內騎自行車或滑板。

食物

三藩市聯合校區SFUSD「資源整合倡議」的最新消息

Estimadas Padres de Familias de MLK:

Espero que esta carta les encuentre felices, descansados ​​y con energía para darles la bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes nuevamente a la escuela. Con respecto a mi, pude disfrutar de un par de viajes con mi esposa y mis hijos; fuimos al Estado de Oregon y a la Ciudad de Los Ángeles para ver a amigos y familiares, y disfrutar del paisaje y la cultura local. También tuve un acontecimiento  sobresaliente  como padre, ya que mi hija de 16 años viajó a Sevilla, España, para estudiar el idioma Español  y la cultura española durante un mes.

Para las familias nuevas en nuestra comunidad, me gustaría presentarme como el Director de la Escuela MLK. Nací y crecí en el Área de la Bahía de San Francisco, y tengo mucho amor por este lugar y la gente que lo hace especial. Este es mi decimosexto año trabajando en escuelas, mi séptimo año como Administrador en MLK y mi segundo año como Director. ¡Espero con ansias otro año escolar para poder  apoyar a nuestros increíbles estudiantes, familias y personal de MLK!

Preparación Para la Escuela

Dormir

Durante el verano, el horario de dormir de su hijo/a puede haber cambiado/alterado y ya no se alinea con nuestro horario escolar. Si ese es el caso, comience a enfatizar que su hijo/a recupere el hábito de dormir de una manera saludable una semana antes de que comiencen las clases. Los estudiantes de secundaria necesitan dormir de 8 a 10 horas cada noche. Anime a sus hijo/a a apagar sus dispositivos electrónicos a las 8:00 pm. , estar en la cama con un libro para leer a las 9:00 p. m. y dormirse a las 10:00 p. m.

Materiales/Utiles

Queremos enseñarles a nuestros estudiantes a ser responsables, lo cual incluye mantener los materiales/útiles que necesitan para el rendimiento escolar. Asegúrese de que su hijo/a traiga los siguientes materiales/útiles a la escuela TODOS LOS DÍAS.

• Mochila
• Un cartapacio con papel y separadores
• olígrafos y lápices
• Chromebook SFUSD cargado
• Botella de agua
• Un refrigerio saludable (frutas secas, barra de granola, nueces, etc.)

Zapatillas deportivas y ropa adecuada para Educación Física (pantalones cortos deportivos oscuros o pantalones deportivos, camiseta deportiva de color claro), que se pueden guardar en el casillero de Educación Física y luego del uso llevar a casa para lavarlos con regularidad

Llegar a tiempo

La escuela comienza a las 9:30 a. m., lo que significa que los estudiantes deben estar en sus asientos, listos para aprender ANTES de las 9:30 a. m. Cuando suena la campana a las 9:30 a. m., se considera que los estudiantes llegaron tarde si no están en el salón de clases. Recomiendo que los estudiantes lleguen a las 9:15 a. m., para que tengan suficiente tiempo para llegar a clase a tiempo.

Horario de los estudiantes

Los horarios de los estudiantes se pueden ver en ParentVue y StudentVue a partir del día viernes 16 de agosto. ¡Recuérdale a su hijo/a que anote su horario para que sepa a dónde ir el primer día de clases!

Semana uno

El año escolar pasado en MLK trabajamos con los estudiantes para diseñar la primera semana de clases, a la que llamamos "Semana uno". La semana uno incluirá a todos los estudiantes trabajando en un proyecto comunitario en equipos de trabajo, divirtiéndose con el personal y sus compañeros de clase, celebrando sus culturas, un evento familiar por la noche y una excursión el día viernes. La intención de nuestro horario especial durante la Semana uno es crear una cultura escolar fortalecida y positiva en MLK que conducirá a los estudiantes estar más comprometidos y mejores resultados de aprendizaje. Si está interesado en aprender sobre la creación de la Semana uno, gran parte del proceso de diseño se puede ver en estas diapositivas.

La primera semana de clases es MUY IMPORTANTE para sentar precedentes sobre el tono y la cultura escolar para el resto del año escolar, y todos tendremos un papel que desempeñar para que la Semana uno sea un éxito. El día lunes 19 de agosto, su hijo/a traerá a casa un formulario de permiso para una excursión para ir a una excursión con su nivel de grado a un parque local el día viernes de tal semana. Asegúrese de firmar y devolver el permiso antes del día jueves de dicha  semana. Todos los estudiantes deben participar en la excursión del día viernes.

Nos encantaría que los padres se ofrecieran como voluntarios o participaran en las actividades de la Semana Uno el dia jueves y/o el dia viernes (haga clic en este enlace para obtener más información e inscribirse para participar y/o ser voluntario), Y marque su calendario para nuestra Noche de Cultural, Familiar y Comida compartida el dia jueves 22 de agosto de 5.30 a 7:00 en MLK; habrá comida, música y actuaciones. El evento es un convivio de comida, Favor de ¡traer algún tipo de comida para compartir que represente la cultura de su familia!

Recordatorios de la Política de MLK

Teléfonos

MLK es una escuela SIN TELÉFONOS. A todos los estudiantes se les entregará una funda para teléfono y deben mantener su teléfono bajo llave en su funda durante el día escolar. Cualquier teléfono que sea visible durante el día escolar, que no esté dentro de una funda para teléfono, será confiscado y guardado para que un padre de familia/tutor legal lo recoja cuando le resulte conveniente. Si necesita comunicarse con su hijo/a durante el día escolar, favor de llamar a la oficina principal al 415-330-1500. Los estudiantes pueden solicitar un pase para usar el teléfono en nuestra oficina de consejería cuando sea necesario. No envíe mensajes de texto ni llame a su hijo/a  durante el día escolar.

Código de vestimenta

• La ropa, las joyas y los artículos personales deben estar libres de imágenes o palabras obscenas, violentas o sexualmente sugerentes, o que promuevan el uso de alcohol, drogas, tabaco u otra actividad ilegal.
• Los estudiantes deben tener calzado que sea seguro y apropiado para la actividad en la que participan.
• La ropa debe ser lo suficientemente grande como para meterse debajo de la prenda de ropa.

Prendas de vestir. Se prohíben las blusas transparentes o el abdomen descubierto. Se prohíben las prendas que exhiben toda la pierna o las nalgas.

A los estudiantes que infrinjan nuestro código de vestimenta se les pedirá que solucionen dicho problema de vestimenta. Si no pueden solucionar el problema de vestimenta, se contactará a los padres para que traigan otra ropa para el estudiante.

Bicicletas, patinetas y monopatines

Los estudiantes que viajan a la escuela en bicicleta, patineta o monopatín deben asegurar su medio de transporte en nuestra estación de bicicletas y patinetas. Si su hijo/a viaja en bicicleta, asegúrese de que tenga un candado para su  bicicleta. Los estudiantes que viajan en patinetas y monopatines necesitarán un candado para asegurarlos en el portabicicletas. Como recordatorio, se requiere que los jóvenes de 18 años o menores usen cascos en bicicletas, patinetas no motorizadas, patinetes y patines en línea o con ruedas, según el Código de Vehículos de California 21212. Los estudiantes no pueden andar en bicicleta o patineta en la escuela.

Comida

• El desayuno y el almuerzo son gratuitos para todos los estudiantes
• Este año escolar, los estudiantes deberán ingresar su número de PIN de comida para recibir el almuerzo. Los estudiantes que tengan una dirección de correo electrónico registrada recibirán un correo electrónico la semana del 5 de agosto de parte del “SFUSD 
• Student Nutrition Services” con su respectivo PIN de comida individual. Los estudiantes también pueden usar y escanear el código de barras en el reverso de su carnet de identificación de estudiante para recibir su comida.
• Los envíos y entregas de alimentos a MLK están prohibidas. No podemos aceptar envíos de entrega de alimentos de servicios como Uber Eats, DoorDash, etc. Cualquier entrega de alimentos que llegue a MLK será interceptada y retenida hasta el final del día escolar. Los padres siempre son bienvenidos a dejar comida para sus hijos/as si es necesario. 

Fechas importantes (consulte el calendario del año escolar académico del SFUSD vinculado aquí)

• 17 de agosto, sábado: Día de bienvenida familiar de 6to GRADO De 11 a. m. a 2 p. m. en MLK.
• 19 de agosto, lunes: Primer día de clases. Habrá una asamblea de orientación especial para todos los estudiantes nuevos en MLK y sus familias el primer día de clases de 9:30 a. m. a 10:30 a. m. en la cafetería.
• 8/22, jueves: Celebración Cultural Familiar de MLK, convivio familiar de comida compartida de 5:30 p. m. a 7:00 pm. 
• 9/2, lunes: Día del Trabajo: no hay clases.

Actualización sobre la “Iniciativa de Alineación de Recursos” del SFUSD

Es posible que usted sepa que el SFUSD está realizando cambios para abordar un déficit presupuestario. El próximo año, el SFUSD comenzará el proceso de cierre, ubicación conjunta y fusión de algunas escuelas. El día 18 de septiembre, el superintendente Dr. Matt Wayne compartirá qué escuelas se verán afectadas por los cambios. Si bien confío en que MLK no se cerrará, ni será reubicada, estará en el mismo lugar ni se fusionará, entiendo que nuestras familias tienen hijo/a en escuelas primarias que pueden verse afectados, lo que causará estrés y ansiedad. Compartiré información tan pronto como la reciba para mantener a todos en nuestra comunidad informados. Aquí hay un enlace a más información sobre la Iniciativa de alineación de recursos.

¡Estamos comenzando este año escolar fortalezidos , con un equipo completo de maestros y una gran cantidad de oportunidades y recursos para nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal! Espero saludar a los estudiantes y a las familias el primer día de clases, que es el día lunes 19 de agosto. Las clases comienzan a las 9:30 a. m. y, por favor, ayude a su hijo/a a desarrollar el hábito de llegar a la escuela 15 minutos antes todos los días para que llegue a tiempo a sus clases y esté preparado para comenzar el día siendo un estudiante  King Seguro, Respetuoso y Responsable.
