FAQ: School Closures and Enrollment

Frequently Asked Questions about how School Closures and Mergers will Affect Enrollment

My child's school is closing - what are my options?

Your Child's Current GradeOptions
Transitional Grade - 5th or 8th GradeApply for next year as usual - there are no changes to your student's enrollment process.
Non-transitional grade - TK-4th, 6-7, or 9-11

You have three options:

  • Option 1: Accept Your Welcome School. All students at closing schools will be assigned to a Welcoming School. Students are guaranteed a spot at this school for the 25-26 school year. Non-transitional families in closing schools do not need to take any action if they wish to attend their Welcome School.
  • Option 2: Main Round Tiebreaker. Students who prefer another school to their Welcome School can apply through the student assignment process for another school. The deadline to apply is 1/31/25. Students in non-transitional grades (TK-4, 6-8, 9-11) at closing schools will receive a tiebreaker in the Main Round and on waitlists.
  • Option 3: Spring Transfer. Students who prefer another school to their Welcome School can apply through the student assignment process for another school. The deadline to apply is 1/31/25. Students in non-transitional grades (TK-4, 6-8, 9-11) at closing schools will receive a tiebreaker in the Main Round and on waitlists.

All students in closing schools are encouraged to continue in their current school for the remainder of the 24-25 school year.

My child is applying to Kinder or TK, and I live in the Attendance Area of a closing school. Which school is my Attendance Area school?

If after the Board meeting, your child's school does not close or merge with another school, your existing Attendance Area school will be the same as in 24-25, as outlined in the Enrollment Guide.

If you live in one of these Attendance Areas and your school does close or merge, your 25-26 Attendance Area school is shown below. This information is tentative and subject to change between now and the December 10 Board Vote.

The Enrollment Center recommends applying to both your 24-25 and potential 25-26 Attendance Area schools, listed in the order of your preference.

Are there any changes to Middle School Feeders?

We are not planning on changes to Middle School Feeders.

In order to get a tiebreaker to your child's middle school feeder, you must write the middle school feeder on your application.

Transition Grade Students' Middle School FeederAll transition-grade students (even those at closing schools) will have a tiebreaker to their existing Middle School Feeder (page 70 in the Enrollment Guide).
Non-Transition Grade Students' Middle School FeederNon-transitional students who move to a welcome school or another school for 25-26 will have a tiebreaker to their new school’s Middle School Feeder (page 70 in the Enrollment Guide).

Will students displaced by school closures or mergers get a tiebreaker in the assignment process? How will it work?

Yes, any student unable to attend their same school next year because of mergers and closures will get a tiebreaker.

The "School Merger or Closure Tiebreaker" will come after the sibling tiebreaker at every grade level.

The tiebreaker will be applied for all students in non-transitional grades who are actively enrolled in schools that are closing when they apply in the student assignment process for a new school for the 2025-26 school year only.

Transition-grade students (5th and 8th) will not be able to use the tiebreaker.
