Grade Level Benchmarks
In an effort to help you help your children continue their learning over the summer vacation, teachers have compiled a list of benchmarks of what your child should know for entering the next grade. Please review these benchmarks and work with your child over the summer so that they are prepared for next year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Curriculum Standards
Comprehensive literacy
In pre-kindergarten through grade 5, Flynn teachers use the SFUSD ELA PK-12 Core Curriculum Scope and Sequence to design their daily lessons. Flynn uses a comprehensive approach to literacy. Each grade level will meet regularly throughout the school year to plan and teach four custom designed spirals. These spirals are focused around four writing genres: Narrative, Informative Explanatory, Opinion and Research.
Through the comprehensive literacy approach we stress the essential dimensions of reading through explicit teaching of phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Daily read-alouds, independent reading time (i.e., reading workshop), writing workshop, and systematic word study instruction are key features of the approach. Teachers demonstrate the habits and strategies of effective reading and writing through a variety of structures: read-aloud, guided reading, shared reading, interactive writing, and mini-lessons in reading and writing. Students are asked to engage in formal and informal conversational structures on grade appropriate topics. Social Studies and Science are integrated within these spirals.

- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
- Model with mathematics
- Use appropriate tools strategically
- Attend to precision
- Look for and make use of structure
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Next Generation Science Standards
In September of 2013, the California State Board of Education adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and developed a timeline with full classroom implementation beginning in 2016-2017. In the meantime, Flynn teachers will continue to integrate science lessons into their Comprehensive Literacy Spirals using Foss Kits and other science resources.
