PBS Network (PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs), KQED (PBS/NPR) (Youth Takeover, Youth Media Challenge) provide opportunities for our students to get advice and support from industry professionals and platforms for publishing student content. Several Independence students who have participated in our Media Arts program have been featured on PBS television and KQED radio. We are very happy to announce that a recent graduate of our program, after completing an internship with KALW, has landed an exciting position with KQED!
Independence High School is currently the only school in San Francisco partnered with the PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs. One of our student reporters appeared briefly on national television during an election special and another was featured on a PBS website with a commentary on artificial intelligence.
We are also proud to announce that for the third year in a row, an Independence Media Arts student was selected to participate on the PBS NewsHour Student Advisory Team. Only a handful of students from across the United States are selected each year as members of this exclusive cohort that meets to advise PBS on the stories young people are interested in.
Below is a photo from one our field trips to our partners at KGO-TV/ABC 7. Students were shown how live news is produced and met with the people that make it happen. On our most recent visit our students presented anchors Kristen Sze and Julian Glover with Independence High School swag.
