Our History Link to this section
Founded in 1980, Independence High School is an alternative high school in the San Francisco Unified School District that offers an “independent study” model of study. Our beautiful campus located in the Inner Sunset neighborhood serves approximately 250 students from across the City.
The school’s highly flexible, supportive, and individualized program of instruction coupled with academic and career counseling is designed for academically competent students with special interests and abilities, but whose scheduling problems, or individual needs cannot be accommodated in a traditional school setting. While we serve mainly students who transfer to us from other high schools, we also take 9th Graders new to high school. Students can enroll in Independence through a “voluntary transfer” from their current high school, or an application with SFUSD’s Pupil Services Department.
