Independence High School offers an individualized learning structure and menu of support to create the conditions for students to become self-determined learners who find success in school, career and beyond. Independence High is an independent-study school offering a flexible schedule to students in grades 9-12. Students participate in one of three programs: One to One, Community or Cohort. Most students attend small project-based learning classes in the morning to meet academic requirements and they engage in Passion Projects (electives) and internships in the afternoon. There is a considerable amount of work outside of classes, so Independence students should be organized and motivated to succeed.
Independence students have access to concurrent enrollment at City College of San Francisco, where they can earn both high school and college credit. Foreign Language offering at Independence is Spanish. Art Electives include Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Mural, Digital Media and more. Other electives or "Passion Projects" include Surfing, Woodshop, Yoga, Anime and Japanese Culture, Birdwatching, Interdisciplinary Studies and more.
Our Models

One-to-One
Students in the One to One model meet individually with a teacher once a week and work totally independently. Entrance to this program is by referral and students must demonstrate organization and focus to be a good fit.
The Cohort
The Cohort is a supportive and collaborative learning model where students take all of their classes within the Cohort and work towards a shared interdisciplinary project each quarter. Cohort students can opt into the morning or the afternoon cohort. Cohort students meet once a day.
Community
The Community model is our "main program". In 2023-2024 Community students will take three classes at a time, meeting twice a week in the mornings and they will elect into afternoon Passion Projects. Community students have an Advisor that they meet with weekly during Friday Advisory time and then they attend Fun Friday workshops. The Community model is a hybrid of engaging in-person classes and independent work. Students in Community get to design their own schedules.
