Mathematics

The Mathematics Department offers courses from first year Algebra 1 through Advanced Placement levels. During the 2022 - 2023 school year we are using materials aligned to the Common Core State Standards in Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Algebra 2-Precalculus. Special sections of Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 are co-taught with teachers from both the Math and Special Education Departments.  Other sections designed for English Learners.  We offer two college-level classes: Advanced Placement Calculus and Advanced Placement Statistics. Math electives include Precalculus and Probability & Statistics.

Required for Graduation: Three years of classes, usually:

Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2

A fourth year of mathematics is STRONGLY recommended for students who want to attend college or university.

Accelerating by taking classes outside the SFUSD has led to some major problems because of different curriculum topics being taught.  SF City College classes, in particular, do not include critical trigonometry topics in Algebra 2. Students have four weeks less trigonometry curriculum than the other students when they return to ALHS.  

The Math Department offers special sections of classes to meet the needs of Special Education/504 and English Learner students.  Co-taught classes in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 feature two teachers – one from both the Math and the Special Education Departments.  Newcomer Pathway classes feature math lessons that also focus on language development, especially writing skills.

Computer Programming and more advanced calculus classes are offered with the ALHS Science Dept. and CCSF when there are insufficient numbers of students to offer them at ALHS.  Programming is responsive to student demand.  As a result, both Probability & Statistics and Advanced Placement Statistics have increased their numbers.
