Does My Child Receive a District Device (Chromebook)? When and How Does It Need to Be Returned?
Updated 10.20.23
Elementary Students (K-5)
SFUSD is becoming a 1:1 Chromebook distirct for Grades K-12! That means there will be one Chromebook available for every K-12 student. In Grades K-3, devices at most schools are stored in locked charging carts on-site and do not go home.
Starting in 4th grade, students at most schools begin participating in a 1:1 Chromebook take-home program. They are assigned a new Chromebook by their school, as long as they have turned in all previously assigned devices. Students bring their fully charged device to school every day for in-class learning and then take it home for homework purposes.
Fourth and fifth grade students should not return their devices at the end of the school year, unless they are leaving SFUSD. Even students going to a different SFUSD school next year should hold onto their devices. That’s because Chromebooks and hotspots are the property of the District, not the school. So devices stay with the student until the student leaves the district. Students who are leaving SFUSD should return their devices, cords, and chargers to their school sites, where their devices will be checked in the same way that library books are.
Each school has its own process for returning District technology. If your student is leaving SFUSD and you are not sure how to return their technology, please check with their teacher or the school office.
Middle Grades Students (6-8)

Please check in with your student’s school site for more detailed information about the school's collection process and dates.
- Those students leaving Grade 12 who are participating in Credit Recovery Programs will be provided Chromebooks by those programs, if necessary.
