Galileo History
Galileo Academy of Science & Technology was built in 1921 and is located in the historic north end of San Francisco. Galileo currently has a staff of more than 180 and serves about 2,000 students. It is one of eleven comprehensive high schools in the San Francisco Unified School District. Galileo offers curriculum that emphasizes excellence in core and elective subjects in English, Mathematics, Social Science, Science, World Languages, Visual and Performing Arts, Physical Education, and Applied Sciences and Technology. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), a college-prep program, is offered to freshmen through senior year. A Digital High School Installation Project was completed in 2003, and in 2005 Galileo received the award for Exemplary Career Technical Education Program. The whole school is networked with WiFi and computers in all classrooms and has seven fully-equipped computer labs for high level learning using the latest information technology. Due to the strong academic program, the school was awarded the California Distinguished School Award in 1996 and 2005. Galileo received the 2005 California Distinguished School Award along with the 2005 Computer Technology Education Award - one of the very few schools that were awarded this. Galileo is also recognized as one of the most promising urban schools by the International Center for Leadership in Education. In 2014, Newsweek Magazine recognized Galileo as one of America's Top High Schools.
