"Denise Hernandez is amazing. My son has a very complex IEP and she's been our primary point of contact and also provides direct services to my son.  I wish I had more mental bandwidth to say how awesome Denise is - she's great on goal-setting, she's been so responsive in getting everything pulled together, she is so effective and wonderful in her sessions with our son and I could go on forever. She is diligent, dependable, timely, engaging, kind, superb attention to detail and she CARES so deeply. Denise brings her best every day. Anne Godfrey, Speech & Language Pathologist, Lawton Alternative School & Francis Scott Key Elementary School

"Ms. Anne Godfrey helps and supports the students with passion and care whether it is with an individual or group of students. Every student has their own essential needs and she goes above and beyond to make sure every student maximizes their potential. Anne primarily works with students with moderate to severe disabilities at both of her schools and devotes her time even during breaks and weekends. She advocates for what they need and supports her families by giving their children appropriate communication tools and devices to communicate at home with. Anne constantly goes to trainings and conferences to update her knowledge and uses data to back up her suggested communication devices. She trains paraprofessionals and families on how to implement the devices so that our students can succeed in effectively communicating with everyone. Ms. Godfrey goes above and beyond to ensure that student’s needs are met regardless of if it’s time to clock out. Adriana Vargas, Parent and Community Organizer, Educational Placement Center

"My mother is 73 years old and does not know anything about technology, emails, or anything. Mrs. Adriana helped my mother with all this and has done much more than that. I have heard her giving her directions to places where she can help us with food, clothing, health insurance, and tutoring for the children. Mrs. Adriana has gone beyond her job to help my mother. She is very professional, sweet, positive and gives a feeling that we are someone even if we do not have papers and that the education of my nephews is important. What person takes time after work to call and check that all is well with the family? To ask if everything is alright and if something is needed? Rami Aweti, Special Education Teacher, Mission High School

Ernestine Brown, Teacher, Junipero Serra

"Ernestine Brown is the epitome of a social justice educator. She is student and family-focused, and believes all students are capable of success. She uses creativity, warmth, and innovative thinking to make all students feel like they are seen, valued, heard, and respected in their classroom community. Ms. Brown has a commitment to diversity, which can be seen in the content of her lessons and the literature that she uses to convey the narratives of marginalized communities. She is skilled at using family partnerships to bring in the stories and voices of folks that have been historically ignored. Linda Tong, Teacher, Hillcrest Elementary School

"Ms. Tong is an exceptional teacher who goes above and beyond for her students to make their learning experience during distance learning very special. She spends many hours, often working until late at night and on the weekend, to prepare culturally and grade appropriate lessons to challenge and accommodate the needs of each child. To provide the best experience possible for her students, she implements different technologies and strategies in her lessons. At the beginning of the school year, some of her students had technical problems signing up for some learning apps, Ms.Tong spent a great amount of her own time to help the families solve the problems. In April of this year, Ms. Tong made a supply bag including books, workbooks, and supplies for her students, and personally delivered them to the students' homes."-Nominated 11/2020.

Michelle Rait, Family School Nurse, Visitacion Valley Elementary School

"Michelle is a great nurse who puts students at the center. She is an amazing advocate for those in need. She has exceptional clinical skills and is a great team player. Michelle is caring. Her ability to make things happen and has made a positive impact on her school community. She has worked with local caterers to provide healthy meals to food-insecure families at Vis Valley Middle School and created a GoFundMe page to support food for the community. Michelle is dedicated to  TUPE/tobacco prevention work. She has superior knowledge on up to date tobacco-related products such as vaping. She educates and supports nurses for substance abuse prevention. "I am nominating Cathy because she goes out of her way to help and support our families. She is a parent and an advocate for our community. Cathy is reliable,  a hard worker, compassionate, and always ready to help. Sara Dunn, Teacher, Monroe Elementary School

"She goes above and beyond for her students to make their experience in Kindergarten during distance learning super special. She is energetic and spends an incredible amount of time and money on providing the best experience possible for her students. Before school began, she made a supply bag for all of her students including all of the supplies they would need, she included markers, crayons, paper, as well as a small whiteboard she bought so that students can participate in zoom by drawing since they can not spell well enough to participate in the chatbox." Yvette Fagan, Teacher, Lawton Alternative School

"Dr. Fagan is a dynamic and highly effective teacher who is always thinking creatively to help students be their best. She has established two new after school clubs, Girls Robotics and Podcasting, for fifth to eighth-grade students as well as the fifth grade Cain's Arcade extravaganza. She thinks about ways to make sure all her students excel in all their subject areas. She incorporated audiobooks for some of her struggling readers to support them. During Distance Learning, she spends a lot of time coming into her classroom to prepare book bags so they have a high-interest book to read at their reading level. I am nominating Dr. Fagan for the RAVE award because she is creative, dynamic, hard-working, and student-centered."-Nominated 10/2020.

Geraldine Frye, Teacher, Ulloa Elementary School

"Geraldine has exemplary commitment to her students' education, and her unwavering determination on keeping the school district’s standards, despite the unprecedented challenges we all have to cope with during this COVID pandemic. Ms. Frye also maintains very strong communication with parents on their kid’s progress in the virtual classroom. As a work-from-home essential worker, I have witnessed Ms. Frye’s tireless efforts on a daily basis to keep the kids focus on their virtual classroom, she insists that each and every student is paying full attention to her instructions, and makes sure they meet SFUSD's standards."-Nominated 10/2020.

Cadi Poile, Director, Custodial Services

"During distance learning, with Cadi Poile's leadership, SFUSD was able to deliver instructional materials to every school site for every student in the district. Cadi and her custodial team are the dedicated people who, working at each and every school site, provided the infrastructure that made this enormous task possible. In addition, beyond working tirelessly to keep the schools clean during this time of crisis when cleanliness is so important, Cadi Poile and her team ensured that multiple vendors and materials shippers were met at each site, and Cadi and her team ensured that the materials were brought into the schools so that the material would be available to every student. Wise educators and principals know that the custodians are among the most valuable resources for smooth operation of any school building, and now we have seen how service and solution-oriented leadership in the custodial department supports the smooth operation of our entire district!"-Nominated 9/2020.

Nicole Phillips, Teacher, Glen Park Elementary School

"Ms. Phillips is amazing and has greatly exceeded my expectations (as a parent of a first-grader) about distance learning. She is a master of her craft. She has so many strategies for engaging students via Zoom- constantly making it very clear what she expects them to do, ways for them to physically show that they are engaged and offering positive re-enforcement. Gregory Haigwood, Teacher, Lawton Elementary School

"As parents, we definitely notice the amount of extra time and effort that Mr. Haigwood puts into virtual learning to make it easier on parents and kids. We really appreciate it and couldn't have asked for a better teacher or a more positive experience. There's a lot of preparation and work outside of school hours that are not accounted and I want to thank him for going above and beyond and being a superstar teacher. He is extremely patient, understanding, and very prepared for virtual learning. "J cares about each student; about their well being, about their passion, and about their ideas and concepts. They see the best in each of their students, trying to give as much as they could to help us with our future and what we want to do. J spends so much time developing different ways to teach and help students explore concepts and ideas. They provide as many opportunities that they can to for us to "take on" something in their class. J has always been open to suggestions, whether it was giving their students a chance for us to lead group study sessions for a "test," a different way for them to present new information or a different structure to a project. They truly go above and beyond with their teaching. Pirette McKamey, Principal, Mission High School

"Pirette is an exceptional employee and educator that has served in SFUSD as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. She has been a leader in the anti racist teaching at Mission high school in all three of those roles. In the Summer of 2020, as the nation was in agony over the incidents of racism in our country, Ms. McKamey brought comfort to people across the nation by talking about her work on NPR and writing about her work in The Atlantic. 'To be an anti-racist educator means I commit to educating all of the students sitting in front of me, including Black and Latinx students,' - Pirette McKamey, Leader, student-centered, fearless, social justice leader, equity centered." Yajaira Cuapio, Social Worker, Visitacion Valley Elementary School

"This is the first year that Ms. Yajaira has been the Social Worker at our school, yet she has already formed strong relationships with students, families, and community organizations. During the past school year, she managed a mentoring program, individual student sessions, small SEL and social skills groups, on top of all her other duties as a school social worker. She reached out and brought back many CBOs to our school to provide resources. Then during the school closures, she worked to help meet all the needs of the community, including emotional and financial support. She has advocated for families and children, making sure their voices are heard. Yajaira has worked tirelessly for our students and families during this difficult time. Evelyn Chan, Teacher, Visitacion Valley Early Elementary School

"Evelyn has been teaching for more than 20 years, all at Visitacion Valley Elementary School, and has formed long-lasting relationships with the students and families in this underserved southeastern part of San Francisco. She goes above and beyond, but without receiving any fanfare. She does not seek recognition--she just spreads her warmth and love for teaching to others. Mrs. Chan is a teacher to everyone. She is the quintessential "warm demander" who makes her students feel that they are loved and cared for and can achieve anything they set their minds to. Mrs. Chan sets high expectations for her students and works hard to provide opportunities for them to succeed. A teacher like Mrs. Chan is so valuable, she deserves all the accolades in the world, but I know she just cares about serving the students of Little Vis, the hidden gem in the corner of San Francisco."-Nominated 7/2020

"These two women have been amazing and very supportive of the needs of the teachers since the Shelter in Place. They have done their best to keep us informed to the best of their ability during these trying times. Also, they helped to answers questions from parents in regard to fees. Alma Cunningham, Teacher, Charles Drew Elementary School

"I have been in awe at the level of dedication and care that Ms. Cunningham has put into her classroom during the school closure period. Initially, when it was a challenge getting students to log into Zoom, she was doing daily 1:1 check-in with students and families. She worked extremely hard to get her families connected and now holds daily class meetings during the week. She is very thoughtful and utilizes a variety of resources to engage students who are very young and, naturally, often distracted. Ms. Cunningham is extremely positive and flexible when working with students and families. She has done all of this with a sense of ease despite how challenging and uncertain things are. I really hope that Ms. Cunningham is recognized as an outstanding teacher who goes above and beyond!"-Nominated 5/2020

Grace Gould, Teacher, Thurgood Marshall High School

"I am a teacher with basic computer skills, and when we had to go to distance learning, with only a weekend to prepare, the learning curve for me (and others, I'm sure) was very daunting. I don't have a use for a smartphone so I don't own one, nor do I use social media. Grace immediately offered to guide me through the basics and brought me confidence and success. She did not have to do this; she was swamped with her own teaching and coaching. We had several long meetings during the busy start of distance learning, and she has made herself available for questions and ongoing help. I really would not have been able to successfully teach my students online if it weren't for her expertise, generosity, and patience. By seeing a need, meeting me at my knowledge level, using her expertise to provide help, and maintaining an ongoing coaching relationship outside of her job scope, Grace epitomizes what a good teacher is and does. "During these unprecedented times, Sharon Cheng has demonstrated great composure and veteran leadership creating distance learning an enjoyable experience. As a result students have been engaged in whole class, small groups, and individualized support during lessons and projects. Sharon's warm demeanor creates a safe place for all students to learn and feel at home. Sharon creates strong relationships with students that allows her to give feedback on performance to exceed past students' own expectations. Most importantly, Sharon has brought our community together by creating online workout videos that feature special guest teachers from other departments on a weekly basis. She effectively coordinates with case managers, delivery drivers, and families to ensure students with disabilities, dietary restrictions, and immediate need, receive meals. Simone's responsiveness, attention to detail, and commitment to serving students and families exemplify integrity. Her dedication to ensuring meals for students is essential to their ability to learn and engage. Amy Whitcomb, Teacher, Sunnyside Elementary School

"Ms. Lee’s passion, commitment, and dedication to teaching and making sure the kids’ academics go uninterrupted through virtual/Distant Learning has really shown through during this difficult time. She works tirelessly to review all the submitted work through Seesaw and Google classroom work and takes time to comment/provide feedback to each and every student. Ms. Lee conducts daily Zoom meetings and small group meetings to make sure her students are continuing to learn every day. She devotes a lot of time to make sure the daily schedule/assignments are full of different, fun, and interesting subjects. Moreover, She is always available to answer any questions the parents/students have. Marisa Lawrence, Teacher, McKinley Elementary School 

"Ms. Lawrence has gone above and beyond teaching my son and his third-grade class while school is closed. I felt like she was a great teacher in the first place but she has really stood out to me since the school closure. I can see the assignments and effort she makes more now since I am more involved in my son's learning during this time. I think Ms. Lawrence puts 110% into her job! She is very caring, kind, extremely patient, and is good at explaining things to the kids. She puts so much work into the assignments to make sure the kids are learning. On top of that, she is a mom of two little kids so I am sure she has to take care of them at the same time as she is teaching my son and his class. "My daughter has J for 8th-grade social studies and she is more actively engaged in this class than any other class. She gets a lot of self-confidence from J's high standards and the assumption that their students will learn and succeed. I feel like the skills and material my daughter is learning in J's class will stay with her for a lifetime. When my 8th-grade son and his friends wanted to start an economics club, they went to J. J gave up a lunch period every week to help these students understand the basics of economics and support them in their efforts to start a school store. Teachers who manage to inspire and connect with their students have a special gift. John Zwoliski, Teacher, A.P. Giannini Middle School 

"He is supportive of his students, he’s positive, kind, creative, and always helps you out if you are stuck. Mr. Zwoliski always comes up with fun assignments that challenge us in a good way to help us learn, such as the Scroll Project. I can tell he really enjoys being a teacher."

"Mr. Zwolinski is my son's favorite teacher. Before the school closure, my son came home from school most days telling me what he learned in history that day. He seemed excited and interested in what he learned. He also tells me now but he really enjoyed being in class with Mr. Zwolinski. My son really enjoyed Mr. Zwolinski's class before the school closure and even with the school closure Mr. Zwolinski is still teaching the kids. "Mr. Liberman stands out for his commitment to helping students learn and thrive. He has always been (even before Shelter in Place) responsive to questions from parents and students. "Mr. Lie keeps his students engaged and keeps his curriculum relevant to the world around them. All year he has done this. In this time of coronavirus and at-home learning, he has stepped up and is offering live classes and discussions with students. He continues to challenge them to learn from the past and think about how it applies to the present and the future. He's dedicated to his subject and his students. She has always encouraged her throughout the school year and we have noticed how much more confident our daughter has become because of all the freedom she has given our child in being herself. She is a wonderful teacher, who creates a warm and happy learning environment for 22 5-year-olds - no mean feat! My son is in Special Ed and she always works with him to support his needs. Whenever he had an issue, her attitude was “how do we best support your son to get him through this” which is so wonderful for me as a parent. She is caring, she loves all of her students and her work, and she creates a loving and kind learning environment for some of our youngest and most vulnerable minds. "Ms. Flores is always on top of keeping parents informed about resources for students and parents. Natalie Kojima, Teacher, Ulloa Elementary School

"My son has a severe food allergy that prevents him from eating cakes, cupcakes, and other goodies during students’ birthday parties. One day, I received an email from Ms. Kojima asking what my son could eat or like to eat so that she could get it for him since he was always left out. This really warmed my heart to know that his thoughtful teacher is also concerned about the students’ well-being in addition to their academic achievements. She makes sure that every student is learning, happy, and healthy. Ms. Kojima is one of the best teachers I have ever encountered. "Ms. Padilla has been an extraordinary teacher for our daughter. Her encouragement and positive feedback have been a huge factor in our daughter's success. She is proactive, checking in, offering extra help, and reaching out to us to let us. Ms. Padilla took time at the end of last semester to write to my husband and me a very personal note about our daughter's work, and her progress through the semester. I recognize that teachers have a huge load and often spend much of their own time and money to just stay up to date with the minimum of what is required of them. "The EES teaching team jumped in head first into learning and using Google Classroom to share the curriculum with the students and families. Everyone is dedicated to making the best of this situation. Amy Chan and Mike Powell, Leak Detection Team, Sustainability & Buildings and Grounds

"The Leak Detection Team is a joint effort of B&G and the Sustainability Office to address $350k in yearly water leaks that have plagued the district over the years. The team is the best of both worlds: thoughtful analysis and a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves determination. Amy Chan methodically and consistently analyses utility bills and usage information to identify the needles in a haystack that are costing us a lot of money. Mike Powell and his team of plumbers go the extra mile to track down leaks and propose solutions for shutting them down. It is this spirit of collaboration that makes the team so effective. Thanks to the efforts of this team, an $85k/yr leak at McAteer and a $75k/yr leak at SF Public Montessori were recently fixed. Daniela Funes, Family Liaison, Thurgood Marshall Academic High School

"Daniela serves as our Student Advocate and Family Liaison, and she is literally the glue that holds our school together. In her role, Daniela is a go-to person for our students, our families, and our staff. The pandemic has amplified the qualities we already appreciate in Daniela. She is on the phone for hours every day talking students through how to use Zoom, or even just how to use a computer. She has joined every single teacher’s google classroom (that’s over 100 classes) so that she can know what students are experiencing when she is helping them over the phone. While our school has plenty of fantastic counseling and wellness staff, Daniela remains the north star for many of our newcomer students. Daniela Funes brings her compassion, commitment, and charm to work every day, which makes her indispensable to the Thurgood Marshall community."-Nominated 4/2020

"During this tough time, the two of them remain positive and working diligently to clean, sanitize, and put in order for our school for staff and students. Both gentlemen are always smiling and talkative. They are so willing to assist you, beyond their duties. They are responsive and reliable. They are a great part of our team. Today I forgot my keys, Quinn stopped what he was busy with to unlock doors for me, carry supplies for me, etc.  And Mr. Lim, who usually works third floor, responded promptly when he was sent to make a trash run one day when Quinn was not available. Longfellow's Walking School Bus Team (Jason Serafino-Agar, Helen Serafino-Agaar, Mrs. Aleman, & Mr. Lee), Longfellow Elementary School

"Over 10 years ago Longfellow started the first "Walking School Bus" in San Francisco, they called it 'Walk 2 Win Wednesdays! Fast forward 10 years later and thanks to the team at Longfellow the "Walking School Bus" is just as strong, if not stronger then it was when it first started. It's more than just walking to school, it's doing your part to help improve the environment, better health, and community building.  Mrs. Aleman, Mr. Lee, and Ms. Helen are Walk & Roll Heroes who give their support to Parent Super Star Jason and his walking team! "Danielle Anderson is a true treasure for Francisco MS staff, students, and families. She goes above and beyond in organizing and helping everyone. During this time full of change and uncertainty, she was able to put together a Go Fund Me Page for our school and our community was able to raise over $26,940 to provide gift cards to grocery stores as a support to our families. Every year she organizes multiple events at Francisco such as the Christmas Party for about 60 of our most needed students, she personally goes and shops for each one of them.  Danielle is an amazing and dedicated teacher who deeply cares for all our students, families, and staff."-Nominated 4/2020

"Mina is such a friendly, positive force at our school! Despite the madness of providing two schools (1,100 kids and teachers too!) full-service hot lunch for nearly two hours straight, she never is without a smile. "Richard and Brendan helped me design and build our classroom's Maker Space. They have been working with me consistently on all the steps since the beginning. We worked with a budget and had to be very mindful of how to transform our classroom into a beautiful space to support STEAM & Project-Based Learning through hands-on and interactive activities. Brendan and Richard's skills were very valuable in terms of planning and implementing all the solutions. They are a great team and full of creative ideas. Most important their problem-solving skills in terms of finding solutions on how to make various workstations and use all the available resources are great.
