What is a Database? Link to this section

  • A database is a virtual library: it is a searchable collection of regularly updated reference articles, encyclopedia entries, magazine and newspaper articles, primary sources and images.

  • Databases contain information that is not available for free and therefore cannot be found with a Google search. When searching one of our databases, you are not searching the Web: you're searching pre-selected material that has been evaluated by professionals for reliability. Citations are always included.

  • SFUSD pays for these databases, but they are free for SFUSD students and educators.

  • At school, all sites are available when logged into your SFUSD account (not browsing as a guest).

  • Ask your librarian for remote logins/passwords that allow access off-campus.
