Community feedback
This page contains community members’ feedback regarding school closures, mergers, and co-locations. We will update this page as we gather additional feedback.
The process to create a new portfolio of schools includes multiple phases of community engagement to ensure the community’s voices are heard. SFUSD facilitated two cycles of online and in-person events from March to May 2024 to gather the community’s input on the criteria that will be used to determine which schools will be considered for closure, merger, and co-location.
On June 25, 2024, Superintendent Wayne presented the proposed criteria for school consolidation to the Board of Education.
Phase One of community engagement included:
- 2 Virtual Town Halls with 1,000 participants
- 16 in-person community sessions with 1,070 participants
- 12,206 complete surveys submitted
- 3,000+ community feedback comments received
- 6 Community sessions about language pathways
- Outreach to 295 community-based organizations
- 291 attendees at 6 CBO information sessions
- 175+ materials translated into 6 languages
- 1,000 translated flyers delivered to CBOs
- 7 meetings with Community Advisory Committees
The District’s community engagement on this topic surpassed all past District community engagement, including those gathering input for the 2022 superintendent search and developing the Vision, Values, Goals, and Guardrails. Notably, this effort also surpassed the school districts researched for best practices.

Community Surveys
Community Survey - Round 1
Between March 28 through April 7, community members gave input on the importance of draft criteria in determining school closures, mergers, and co-locations. This was a high-level values-based question, asking if any given proposed criteria should be used in determining school consolidations.
SFUSD collected over 10,000 survey responses.

SFUSD is committed to transparency, inclusivity, and accessibility throughout the Resource Alignment Initiative, and we have made materials available in multiple languages. However, some community feedback, such as comments received through SFUSD’s Student and Family Resource Link, cannot be shared publicly due to privacy expectations.
Note: A previous version of this webpage noted direct outreach to School Site Councils as part of the first phase of community engagement. We apologize for the incorrect addition of this to the website. School Site Council members with questions about or input on the RAI should submit a ticket through Resource Link or speak with their principal.
