Public Comment Protocols

Protocols for Public Comment During Board Meetings

The Board of Education values hearing from members of the SFUSD community and the broader public. Given the fact that we have limited meeting time, and it does not serve the public interest to have meetings run late into the night, we must limit the time for public comment in meetings, but we always appreciate other methods of communication, such as emails. It’s possible to email individual board members (email addresses) or the entire board at boardoffice@sfusd.edu

Regular Board “business meetings” fall on the 2nd Tuesday of every month unless otherwise noticed. At Regular meetings, the public can comment on agenda or any other matter related to SFUSD (non agenda items).

The Board holds monthly Special Workshop meetings to have longer discussion about SFUSD’s progress toward meeting our goals and guardrails, so we can focus on student outcomes. At Special Workshop Meetings, state law limits public comment to only items on the agenda for that meeting. There is no general public comment on non agenda items at these meetings. At all meetings, in-person public comment will be prioritized. If time permits, virtual public comment may be offered.

The Board of Education is committed to conducting our meetings effectively and in view of the public. Which means they should be held at reasonable and predictable hours. In order to do so, we are committed to completing public comment and beginning to conduct board business no later than 8 p.m.

Please note, the Board of Education and district staff legally cannot respond to public comment during Board meetings.

To share your comments with the Board of Education, the public can email boardoffice@sfusd.edu. Board of Education Commissioners serve in their roles part time, thus it is not always possible to reply to all emails, but Commissioners receive and review all emails. Superintendent, staff, and individual board member contact information can be found on our website.
