Literacy/English Language Arts
At Little Vis, students learn to read and read to learn through the Comprehensive Approach to Literacy, which provides a rounded and thorough education in reading, writing, and word study from Kindergarten to 5th grade. Teachers work with students in small groups and 1-on-1 during reading and writing workshop. The curriculum is aligned with the CA Common Core ELA Standards and follows the narrative, informational, opinion, and research spirals.
Mathematics
To develop mathematical thinkers, we believe "all students will make sense of rigorous mathematics in ways that are creative, interactive, and relevant." The SFUSD Math Core Curriculum engages students in rigorous mathematics through rich, challenging tasks.

Science/Social Studies
We build critical thinking in our students through the Amplify Science curriculum and Harcourt Reflections curriculum for social studies.
On top of that, we enrich students' science and social studies learning with field trips and Garden class with our Outdoor Educator (see "Enrichment" page to learn more!).

Technology
At VVES, all classroom incorporate technology in students' learning. Several classrooms have full sets of Chromebooks and iPads. Our school also has two Chromebook Carts and an iPad cart for classes to use. Students can read on MYON, a database of high-interest published books in all genres, in class and at home. They also use Google Apps for typing documents, creating presentations, and doing research. Other technology tools include modeling in science, practicing Chinese, game-based vocabulary and math learning, and more!

Personalized Learning Environments (PLE)
Four classes are part of SFUSD's Personalized Learning Environments (PLE) pilot program, started in 2018. They received professional development in instructional practices, as well as new furniture and technology to transform students' learning for the 21st century!
The PLE teachers were also awarded a grant from the district to further their practices in personalized learning and to bring it to other classrooms at our school!
