SFUSD Spring Transfer Process
Link to this section
The 2024-2025 Spring Transfer application deadline was on November 8, 2024, and Spring Transfer results were shared during the week of December 16, 2024.
If you submitted a Spring Transfer request, your assignment letter contains the result of your transfer request. Follow the instructions on your letter, which was mailed to your home address and is viewable in the "Documents" section of ParentVUE.
Find out more information about Spring Transfer in the sections below.
What is a Spring Transfer Request?
Spring Transfer requests are for families of current SFUSD who desire to transfer to another school for the Spring semester. Spring Transfer applications are for one school only. Only current SFUSD students (excluding charter schools) are eligible to submit a Spring Transfer application.
Important: Lowell High School and Ruth Asawa School of the Arts do not enroll new students through the Spring Transfer process.
How are students selected for assignments in the spring transfer?
SFUSD's student assignment system is used in the spring transfer assignment run, just as it is in the Main Round, Round 2, and the Wait Pool. The same tiebreakers (preferences) come into play. If there are more applications than there are seats available, random numbers are generated for each applicant; applicants who receive a higher random number get assigned before those with a lower random number.
When do families receive their Spring Transfer assignment results?
Families of Spring Transfer applicants received a notification letter in the mail during the week of December 16, 2024. Students who receive an assignment at their requested school will begin at the start of the spring semester (January 6, 2025). Students who are unable to receive an assignment to their spring transfer request will remain enrolled at their current school.
If I get into my requested school through the Spring Transfer process, will I have the chance in December to decide whether or not I actually want to transfer?
No — any spring transfer assignment automatically replaces the student’s previous school assignment. If your student is assigned to your requested school during the Spring Transfer process, they will automatically be unenrolled from their previous school. You should only submit a Spring Transfer request if you definitely prefer transferring to the requested school over staying at your current school.
Is it possible to cancel a Spring Transfer application?
If you submit a Spring Transfer request but subsequently wish to cancel it, contact the Enrollment Center by emailing enrollinschool@sfusd.edu, calling 415-241-6085, or visiting one of our office locations.
We cannot guarantee that we can cancel or undo your transfer application, now that the deadline has passed.
When can families see the number of Spring Transfer applicants to each school?
The Enrollment Center will publish a count of Spring Transfer applications for each school-grade-program on the following dates:
- List of Active Spring Transfer Requests (as of 10/11/2024)
- List of Active Spring Transfer Requests (as of 10/25/2024)
- List of Active Spring Transfer Requests (as of 11/6/2024)
The lists will be shared as links in this location.
What if I still wish to transfer schools for Spring 2025?
If you wish to transfer schools for January - June 2025, for any reason, contact the Enrollment Center between December 23, 2024 and January 10, 2025. During this period, called Winter Open Enrollment, students can transfer into any school that has an open seat.
This option is available for all current students, including those who:
- Did not get into their requested school through the Spring Transfer process
- Got into their requested school through the Spring Transfer process, but wish to remain at their previous school or transfer elsewhere
- Did not participate in the Spring Transfer process
