Fifth Grade - World Language in Elementary School

Overview

SFUSD has a variety of World Language in Elementary School programs. We do not offer detailed guidance here for each. Please contact the Multilingual Pathways team for guidance. 

World Language in Elementary School Programs in SFUSD

SFUSD offers Elementary World Language Programs in Arabic, Filipino, Japanese, and Vietnamese. The programs follow two different models:

 

1. In-class Language Teacher: The teacher of record is also the language teacher, similar to a biliteracy or DLI model

Culture and language 

  • Students receive language instruction for at least 30 minutes, three to five times per week, year-round. 
  • Instruction is aligned to the CA World Language (WL) Standards
  • In addition to the daily WL instructional time, teachers provide other language opportunities throughout the day. 

Offered in 

  • Filipino at Longfellow and Bessie Carmichel
  • Japanese at Claredon

 

 

2. World Language Rotating Teacher: One or two language teachers provide instruction to all grade levels K-5 in participating schools

Culture and language 

  • Students receive language instruction for at least 30 minutes, three (3) times per week, year-round. 
  • Instructional units are aligned to the CA World Language (WL) Standards
  • Cultural events are planned with classroom teachers

Offered in

  • Arabic at Redding
  • Japanese (Sensei Model) at Rosa Park (five times per week)
  • Vietnamese at Tenderloin
