Guidance as you separate from SFUSD

As your time with SFUSD comes to an end, we want to ensure that you have information on hand to help address common questions and concerns regarding your departure from our school district.

Final Pay: Your final paycheck will be issued on the pay date of the pay period within which your last reporting day falls. This paycheck will include any remaining salary owed to you, as well as payouts and other benefits you may be eligible for.

Turnover of District-Issued Materials: Before your last reporting day, please return all equipment, keys, access cards, fobs, and any other school district property entrusted to you during your employment. This includes devices, keys to classrooms, offices, equipment rooms, and any other facilities. You can return these items to your direct supervisor unless directed otherwise. Benefits

  • Paraeducators/Classified: Benefit-eligible employees will be covered until the last day of the pay period within which their last reporting day falls. Any guidance on continuing coverage through COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act), if applicable, as well as information on any other benefits you may be eligible for, will be provided within 30 days of your official termination date. COBRA allows you to continue your health insurance coverage for up to 18 months after your employment ends, provided you meet certain criteria.

  • Certificated/Administration: Benefit-eligible employees will be covered until the last day of the month within which their last reporting day falls; employees who do not intend to work next school year will have their benefits terminated retroactively effective July 1, 2024.  If you are a teacher separating at the end of the school year and plan to work summer school, your benefits will terminate effective July 1, 2024.  Any guidance on continuing coverage through COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act), if applicable, as well as information on any other benefits you may be eligible for, will be provided within 30 days of your official termination date. COBRA allows you to continue your health insurance coverage for up to 18 months after your employment ends, provided you meet certain criteria.

Medical and Vision: Please note that enrollment in medical/ vision benefits is administered by the San Francisco Health Service System (SFHSS). The COBRA Administrator for SFHSS benefits is the P&A Group (800) 688-2611). 

For Dental: The COBRA Administrator for SFUSD dental benefits is HealthEquity | WageWorks (COBRA administrator), Member Service Number - 888-678-4881.

Alternatives for Health Coverage

You should consider all options you may have to get other health coverage before you make your decision. There may be more affordable or more generous coverage options for you and your family through other group health plan coverage (such as a spouse's plan), the Health Insurance Marketplace, or Medicaid. 

Losing your job-based coverage is also a special enrollment event in the Health Insurance Marketplace (Marketplace). The Marketplace offers "one-stop shopping" to find and compare private health insurance options. In the Marketplace, you could be eligible for a tax credit that lowers your monthly premiums and cost-sharing reductions (amounts that lower your out-of pocket costs for deductibles, coinsurance and copayments), and you can see what  your premium, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs will be before you make a decision to enroll. Eligibility for COBRA continuation coverage won't limit your eligibility for Marketplace coverage or for a tax credit. Please note that the SFUSD Benefits team does not advise employees on this matter upon separation.
 

Pension

  • CalSTRS: If you participated in the CalSTRS pension program for less than 5 years, you may request a refund of the employee contribution by contacting CalSTRS directly.  If you take no action or were participating in CalSTRS for 5+ years, you are now vested.  If you take employment in another California Public School District, you will continue membership with CalSTRS in that school District. We recommend visiting www.calstrs.com for contact information, forms, etc. 

  • SFERS: If you participated in the SFERS pension program for less than 5 years, you may request a refund of the employee contribution only by contacting SFERS directly. If you accept employment at another City and County of San Francisco department and take no action, your pension may continue with that department; please check with your hiring department for confirmation.  If you are hired at a California public agency that participates in the CalPERS pension system ,or a reciprocal retirement system within six (6) months of your District separation, you may be eligible for reciprocity. We recommend visiting www.mysfers.org for more information on requesting a refund, reciprocity and eligibility in your new City and County of SF position.
