1. DUAL LANGUAGE PATHWAYS

Dual Language Learner Pre-Kindergarten

Students Served

  • English Learners who are native Cantonese speakers
  • Bilingual students who speak Cantonese and English
  • English proficient students

Language Instruction
70% of instruction in Cantonese, 30% instruction in English.

Pathway Eligibility
All students are eligible regardless of language proficiency.

2. K-8 ALICE FONG YU CHINESE IMMERSION PILOT PROGRAM

Students Served

  • English Learners
  • English proficient students

Language Instruction
Start with 80% instruction in Cantonese, 20% instruction in English in Kindergarten and decrease to 50% instruction in Cantonese, 50% instruction in English by 5th grade.

Pathway Eligibility
The pilot implements a program that evaluates an alternative student ratio between 1/3 and 2/3 of English Learners and 2/3 and 1/3 of English proficient students.

Note: Instruction is in Cantonese, but this program includes one course in Mandarin in grades 6-8.

 

3. BILITERACY PATHWAYS

Kindergarten- Grade 5 Elementary Biliteracy

Students Served

  • English Learners
  • Bilingual students who speak both English and Cantonese

Language Instruction

Instruction similar to Dual Language Instruction (DLI) but designed for potential English learners who are native speakers of Cantonese.

Pathway Eligibility   

  • Students applying for Kindergarten or 1st grade whose home language is Cantonese.
  • Students in grades 2-5 who are currently not in Dual Language Immersion or Biliteracy must be assessed and demonstrate grade level proficiency in the Cantonese.

4. SECONDARY DUAL LANGUAGE PATHWAYS

6-12 Secondary Dual Language (SDL)

  • English proficient students

Language Instruction
Dual Language Immersion and Biliteracy merge starting in middle school and students take 2 academic courses in Cantonese, and one course in Mandarin.

Pathway Eligibility   
• Students who demonstrate grade level proficiency in the pathway language assessment given at the EPC.

5. NEWCOMER PATHWAYS

Instruction in Cantonese with 60 minutes of Designated ELD.

Pathway Eligibility

Newly arrived to the US (Emerging Level).

6th-8th Grade Middle School Newcomer

Students Served

  • English Learners

Language Instruction

Sheltered content instruction in English with 45-90 minutes of designated ELD (English Language Development) class.

Pathway Eligibility

Students who have recently immigrated / have newly arrived to the US (Emerging Level)

Language Instruction

6. WORLD LANGUAGE PATHWAYS

9-12 High School World Language

Students Served

  • All students

Language Instruction

Students are required to complete two years or 20 credits of a World Language, or demonstrate proficiency using one of the methods listed in this manual, to graduate from high school.

Admission to UC/CSU requires two years (three years recommended) of study in the same World Language. Students should take the language sequentially without skipping a year between courses.
