Student Classroom Concerns Resolution Process

Our process for addressing student classroom concerns is designed to provide guidance and resolution. To ensure a fair and effective approach, we've established the following steps:

1. Initiation: When a student or caregiver reports a concern to the counselor, it triggers the process. Caregivers are informed if a student reports a concern to the counselor or school staff. The counselor gathers information from the student, staff members involved, and any witnesses to gain a comprehensive understanding. A classroom observation might also be conducted.

2. Restoration: The counselor collaborates with the student and staff member involved to mediate and resolve the issue. The aim is to restore relationships and support the student's academic success and social-emotional well-being.

3. Evaluation: If the concern persists, a meeting is arranged involving the caregiver, student (as appropriate), and teacher to address issues or misunderstandings. The goal remains to create a plan that restores relationships and supports the student's academic success and social-emotional well-being.

4. Follow-up: The counselor follows up with the student/caregiver 2-4 weeks after the caregiver/teacher meeting to assess if further support is necessary.

5. Escalation: In case the concern remains unresolved, a meeting is organized involving the counselor, student (as appropriate), caregiver, teacher, and assistant principal to seek resolution.

6. Monitoring: A follow-up is conducted 2-4 weeks after the meeting by the Assistant Principal or counselor to evaluate the progress in resolving the concern.

7. Further Escalation: If the concern persists, a meeting is arranged with the counselor, teacher, student (as appropriate), caregiver, assistant principal, and the school principal for further intervention.

Throughout this process, our goal is to gather information from relevant parties, including witnesses where appropriate, with the ultimate aim of restoring relationships and effectively addressing concerns while simultaneously supporting the academic success and social-emotional wellbeing of the student.

Caregiver Initiated Classroom Concern: Addressing Concerns in Our School

At Everett, addressing classroom concerns or issues is structured to provide comprehensive support, guidance, and resolution. We've established a systematic process that aims to ensure fairness and efficiency while addressing concerns in a constructive manner.

Our structured approach unfolds in the following steps:

1. Initiation - Direct Communication: The primary step when a caregiver has a concern is to encourage direct communication with the teacher or instructor to address the issue. This fosters an open and direct dialogue to resolve concerns.

2. Collaboration and Mediation: The caregiver and teacher collaborate to plan, mediate, and work towards resolving the issue. This collaborative effort ensures an inclusive and supportive process to address concerns effectively.

3. Counselor Involvement - Facilitating Resolution: If concerns persist despite efforts between the caregiver and teacher, a school counselor steps in to facilitate a meeting with the staff member and caregiver. This intervention aims to mediate and collaboratively resolve the issue, ensuring an equitable, inclusive, and supportive process.

4. Follow-up Support: To ensure ongoing support, the counselor conducts a follow-up check-in with the student and their family 2-4 weeks after the caregiver-teacher meeting to assess if further support or assistance is necessary.

5. Escalation Meeting: Should the concern remain unresolved, an escalated meeting is organized that includes the counselor, student/caregiver, teacher, and assistant principal. This comprehensive approach aims to address the issue in a more coordinated and collective manner.

6. Progress Monitoring: We maintain ongoing monitoring, conducting a follow-up 2-4 weeks after the meeting, facilitated by either the Assistant Principal or counselor. This evaluation aims to monitor and assess the progress in resolving the conflict.

7. Further Escalation and Principal Involvement: If the concern persists despite previous interventions, a meeting may be arranged involving the counselor, teacher, student/caregiver, assistant principal, and the school principal. This meeting aims to address the matter with increased attention and involvement from higher-level stakeholders.

Throughout this process, our goal is to gather information from all relevant parties, including any witnesses, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the situation. Our ultimate aim is to restore relationships, reach a mutual agreement, and effectively address concerns for the well-being and success of our students.

Everett Middle School Conflict Resolution Process

1. Initiation: The conflict resolution process at Everett Middle School begins when a student or their family reports a concern to the school counselor.

2. Investigation and Mediation: The counselor and/or dean initiates an investigation by gathering information from the reporter, the accused person, and any witnesses. Collaboratively, the student(s), reporter, and counselor work together to plan, mediate, and resolve the issue. This may involve a restorative meeting and, if necessary, the implementation of appropriate consequences.

3. Evaluation and Parent Meeting: If the concern persists, the counselor or dean arranges a meeting with the parent and relevant parties to address underlying issues or misunderstandings.

4. Follow-up Support: To ensure ongoing support, the counselor conducts a follow-up check-in with the student and their family (as needed) 2-4 weeks after the meeting, assessing whether further support is needed.

5. Escalation Meeting: Should the concern remain unresolved, a meeting is scheduled involving the counselor and/or dean, student/parent, other parties as appropriate, and assistant principal to address the issue.

6. Progress Monitoring: Ongoing monitoring occurs as needed, with a follow-up 2-4 weeks after the meeting conducted by the Assistant Principal or counselor to evaluate the progress in resolving the conflict.

7. Further Escalation and Principal Involvement: If the concern persists despite previous interventions, a meeting may be arranged with the counselor, student/parent/guardian, assistant principal, and the school principal and other parties as appropriate to address the matter with higher-level involvement and attention.

This comprehensive process details the steps Everett Middle School takes to effectively manage and resolve conflicts. It operates at various levels to address concerns and promote a safe, equitable, and supportive school environment. It's important to note that in certain situations, adjustments to this process may occur to align with California Ed Code procedures and the specific nature of the incident.

Throughout this process, our aim is to gather information from all relevant parties, including any witnesses if appropriate, with the ultimate goal of restoring relationships, teaching our students about healthy relationships and healthy conflict resolution, and effectively addressing concerns.
