What are LGBTQ+ Liaisons?
Since 1989, LGBTQ+ liaisons have led initiatives to create welcoming, safe, and supportive learning environments in middle and high schools within SFUSD. In 2022, these efforts were extended to elementary schools by introducing Pride liaisons. These liaisons are often classroom teachers, but they can also be social workers, school counselors, or paraprofessionals who have taken on additional responsibilities, such as:
- sponsoring regular Rainbow, Pride, or GSA (Genders and Sexualities Alliance) meetings with students,
- coordinating school-wide or lunchtime awareness activities with student leaders, and
- leading two presentations at their school sites on LGBTQ+ student rights, health/wellness trends, local resources, and best practices.
Liaisons receive stipends for completing the required duties above and demonstrate a commitment to helping their schools be welcoming and supportive of LGBTQ+ students, and their families.
Funding for the middle and high school LGBTQ+ Liaison program is made possible by grants awarded to SFUSD by the CDC Division of Adolescent School Health's HIV Prevention program and CDE's Tobacco Use Prevention & Education program. Elementary Pride Liaisons are supported through a grant awarded by Spark* SF Public Schools.
