Lunar New Year begins this week, and Lakeshore Elementary’s kindergartners are ready to put on a parade. Each year, the school’s four kindergarten classes put on a lion dance to ring in the new year. Dressed in costumes and playing drums, they take to the hallways amid cheers from their upper classmates.

SFUSD schools are closed Thursday, Feb. 19 (Lunar New Year) and Friday, February 20 (observance of Presidents Day). Central offices will be open Feb. 19 and closed Feb. 20.
A note about holidays this week: in the fall of 2013, the SFUSD calendar committee, which is comprised of representatives from SFUSD labor unions and parent organizations, met to create the academic calendar for the school year 2014-15. It was determined that SFUSD should observe Presidents Day 2015 immediately following the Lunar New Year holiday, because the holidays occurred on Monday and Thursday of the same week. The move was intended to minimize disruption to class time for students. The calendar was approved over a year ago by the San Francisco Board of Education, at a public board meeting in January, 2014.
The academic calendar for next year, 2015-16, has been adopted by the Board of Education, and observance of the Presidents Day holiday will occur on the same day as the federal holiday.
