It’s hard to believe the school year is almost halfway over and winter break is just around the corner. But just because schools are on break for two weeks doesn’t mean our learning has to stop! Learning can be done both indoors and outdoors, at a desk or while walking around.
There are many ways that families can continue to engage their children in learning when school is not in session. Keep reading for some fun ideas.
Read a book (or lots of books!) Link to this section
Did you know that SFUSD students have full access to a public library card through the SF Public Library’s Scholar Card program? Students receive a special email from the library with their account number. This means no paper applications or waiting. Every student has equitable access to millions of free resources!
With your library account you can access free eBooks, eAudiobooks, eComics and more on Hoopla Digital. Library staff are available by text, phone, email, or chat if you need help getting set up.
The public library has books in many languages. Why not check out a phrase book in a language you’ve been wanting to learn? You can reinforce new vocabulary in the target language by using sticky notes to label items that you see everyday. Also, many streaming services have subtitles in other languages; use them to passively learn new vocabulary in the target language as you watch a series.
Visit a garden or museum Link to this section
Even in winter the gardens of Golden Gate Park are stunning. Take pictures of flowers that are blooming and try to learn their names. On a rainy day, consider a museum! San Francisco residents can visit museums for free on certain days. Before going to an exhibit, you can often read about the artist(s) online. SFMOMA’s Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture, even has a quiz for you to take that will generate a custom list of must-see artwork for you.
Get outside or stretch Link to this section
Fresh air can be very energizing for both body and mind. Find a walking buddy and set a goal to walk for thirty minutes together. Or, make walking part of running errands. Get off the bus a few blocks before your destination so you can get more time in valuable daylight. We spend so much time indoors during winter and that can make the season feel like it’s dragging on. When inside, stretch your muscles every hour and take long screen-free breaks.
Practice mental wellness activities Link to this section
Mental wellness is just as important as physical wellness. Have you done something kind for yourself lately? Make a cup of your favorite coffee, tea, or hot chocolate and take time to write down some reflections about 2024. What went well? What would you change? Or maybe you prefer calling a trusted friend or family member and having a meaningful conversation.
However you choose to spend your winter break, I wish you a wonderful and restful time. I look forward to connecting with you in the new year!
