The work described in the book includes collaboration with external organizations to research the school food system, implement changes, evaluate the results, and move forward with the best ways to innovate school food. To date, this process has resulted in 82 student-centered dining space redesigns, 4 kitchen renovations to improve infrastructure, and our new Refresh menu launching at 21 schools. In this eBook, you'll gain insight into how we've made decisions over the years, see how changes have impacted students directly, and learn how we plan to continue improving school food in the coming years.

Continue our cafeteria redesign work
Cafeterias are a space in every school where students and school staff occupy a shared space, where they come together to eat, celebrate, learn, connect, and bond with each other. When that space is beautiful and well-maintained, it communicates to students and the rest of the school community that they are cared for. SNS has already redesigned 82 cafeterias with the input of students, administrators, and school staff, reaching 42,000 students.
Build infrastructure to support scratch and speed scratch cooking
To provide equitable access to this menu across all SFUSD schools, a centralized kitchen, warehouse, and distribution system is necessary, requiring substantial and sustained public investment in our school food infrastructure. Additionally, facilities updates would be necessary at most schools to accommodate buffet-style meal service serving centrally prepared high-quality meals.
Invest in a supportive, inspiring employee experience for dining staff
Upgrading kitchens leads to the creation of strong culinary teams, career advancement opportunities, and more union-benefitted jobs. This, in turn, strengthens the overall resilience of the system and is an investment in the workforce of the San Francisco community.
