When designing a Schoolwide Physical Education Schedule, please adhere to the following:
Schedule Guidelines
- Ensure every student receives physical education instruction from a credentialed teacher for 100 minutes per week.
- PE Specialist schedules ought to align with SFUSD’s contract language for instructional minutes as much as possible- aiming to provide 280-300 instructional mins per day. This is an average of 6 classes per day. Schedules reflecting 8 or more classes per day will most likely not be approved.
- PE minutes cannot be counted during schoolwide morning intake/circle- PE classes are standards-based and cannot successfully meet 6 different grade-level standards in 5-10 minutes.
- Transition time between classes with a dedicated instructional space: 5 minutes
- Transition time between classes that require the PE Specialist to move instructional spaces: 10 minutes
Per SFUSD Contract and Credentialing
- Classes must receive instruction from a PE Specialist at least once a week and the remaining mandated instructional minutes must be provided by a credentialed teacher
- PE class size as per UESF contract (TK - Grade 3 up to 22 students, Grades 4 - 5 up to 33 students)
- PE Specialists shall receive a lunch break equal to that of a K-5 classroom teacher
- PE Specialists shall receive non-teaching duties equal to that of a K-5 classroom teacher
- PE Specialists shall have 150 minutes of duty-free preparation time during the work-week, in blocks no smaller than 20 minutes. Preparation time for PE Specialists shall occur before and after the instructional day.
- PE Specialists shall aim to provide the same instructional minutes per contract as K - 5 teachers
Instructional Space Guidelines
- PE classes should not be scheduled during recess or lunch periods, unless a gymnasium/multipurpose space or separate appropriately sized schoolyards are available (130 - 150 sq ft/child)
- Community Based Organizations should be scheduled so they do not conflict with PE classes or instructional area
How to Submit a Schoolwide PE Schedule
STEP 1: Resources to Create a Schoolwide Schedule
Schoolwide-specific PE Schedules are located on Google Drive - Search “[insert school name] PE Folder”> Master Schedule Folder. This folder contains site-specific archived schedules as points of reference. Schedules identify instructional spaces, class times, grade levels, teacher names, room numbers, all classes are receiving 100 mins per week, early release times, lunch/recess times, unusable times, and PE Specialist lunch.
STEP 2: Submit Schedule - no later than September 1st, 2023
Submit the Schoolwide PE Schedule to Desirae Feria at FeriaD@sfusd.edu. Once received, I will begin the review and approval process.
-
- PE Schedules are approved in the order they are received and pending the above-outlined guidelines are met. (ie. instructional scheduling and space, UESF Contract, and credentialing) Please input accurate information prior to submitting
STEP 3: The PE Department will notify the PE Specialist or the site’s designated schedule creator via email if there are any questions, concerns, or additional edits required to approve the school’s schedule. We find that most schedules require minor editing and adjustments. The approval process can take a couple of weeks to complete. We ask that you respond in a timely manner to all emails requesting additional information and edits.
School sites that have not submitted PE schedules by SEPTEMBER 15, 2023 may result in the PE Specialist temporarily being moved to another site to provide instructional support.
PE Specialist Responsibilities during the approval process:
While schedules are being reviewed the PE Specialist can:
- Provide PE instruction by either using last year's schedule or the newly developed draft schedule OR
- Assist in developing the Schoolwide PE schedule, OR
- Work on completing the Beginning of the Year PE Checklist
