The following policies are addressed in our District Wellness Policy. Please review when planning school parties, fundraisers, or other food/beverage sale opportunities.

• How to schedule food/beverage sales or celebrations involving food/beverages?
  • Permitted to take place after lunch time (so students can still enjoy a nutritious school lunch and so we don’t have excess food waste!). It is against District policy to sell or give out food/beverages at the same time as school breakfast, lunch, snack, or supper.
  • For food/beverage sales or celebrations after the lunch period, ensure the foods/beverages meet SFUSD’s Nutrition Guidelines. Focus on offering fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, lean proteins, or whole grain items. There are lots of fun ways to engage students in these healthier practices!
  • If you are planning food/beverage sales, please talk to your Area Supervisor first so we can be in alignment. 
     
• What are Competitive Foods? Any food/beverage not part of the school meal program that is sold, served, or given away to students on school campus during the school day, such as foods/beverages part of classroom celebrations, fundraisers, school stores, and foods/beverages donated to the school. 
   
• How do food sales impact SFUSD budget? In addition to ensuring compliance with SFUSD’s Wellness Policy, scheduling food or beverage sales or celebrations during meal times takes funding away from schools. Student Nutrition Services receives over 80% of our funding from the federal government via reimbursements for meals served. This funding covers all Department expenses, including food, labor, indirect, etc. Any deficit in SNS’ budget is covered by the Unrestricted General Fund, which takes money away from schools.
