Did you know? The school meal program is required by State and Federal policy to provide complete meals that are nutritious and balanced. This helps ensure students get enough fuel for the day!
- A complete Breakfast means at least 1 serving of fruit is included in the meal.
- A complete Lunch means at least 1 serving of fruits or vegetables is included in the meal.
- Extra servings of fruits & vegetables are allowed! If students are still hungry, especially our students with good appetites, please encourage them to take extra servings of fruits and veggies:
- All students can take up to 2 fruits for extra fuel at both Breakfast and Lunch. Remember, fruits can be saved to snack on later!
- At Refresh schools, students can take up to 2 servings of vegetables with their Lunch. Find a list of Refresh Middle and High schools at sfusd.edu/schoolfood under “Lunch”.
- At all other schools, students can take up to 2 servings of vegetables with Lunch and 9-12 grade students can take up to 3 servings of vegetables with Lunch!
We know this feels unnecessarily confusing at times. The specifics trace to requirements from State & Federal policies that dictate how the meal program operates. Thank you for your partnership in guiding students in their choices, as it relates to your school or grade level.
Please note, a second meal during a meal period is only available towards the last 5-10 minutes of meal service, and only if there are leftovers. It is important to make sure all students have gotten a chance to receive a meal before offering seconds. You can check with your Dining Staff to find out if there are leftovers.
If you know families or students who need assistance accessing food, you can share the link and resources on the SFUSD SNS Other Food Resources webpage, where there is information about food pantries & more. sfusd.edu/foodresources
