WHO: All Site Administrators and Teachers
WHAT: Vision and Hearing Screening for school age children is required by state law (CA Ed Code, Section 49452). The following students will receive vision and hearing screening during the 2022-2023 school year:
- Vision Screening: Students in grades 1, 4, and 7
- Hearing Screening: Students in grades 1 and 4
- Referrals from other elementary, middle and high school grade levels;
- Students being referred for initial psycho-educational testing;
- Students with IEPs with upcoming Triennial Reviews
WHY: Poor vision and hearing in children can interfere with coordination, acquisition of skills, achievement of developmental milestones, and the ability to learn properly. Early detection of vision and hearing loss can provide the opportunity to correct the problem earlier, and with less interference to learning.
HOW: Responsibilities of Site Administrator
- Enter screening dates on master calendar: Please do not schedule field trips that include students being screened on screening date.
- Designated a staff member to coordinate with SFSD staff in creating day of screening schedule
- Notify staff of screening dates and procedures:
- Elementary and Middle Schools: Review and implement the instructions provided in this OASIS. This year, vision and hearing screening will be conducted by school district nurses on the same day, so please reserve two rooms on the day of your school's vision and hearing screening. A quiet space, away from the yard and/or music rooms should be used for hearing screenings to allow for most accurate results. If you have a School District Nurse at your school, please ensure they are freed up to conduct the screening on the scheduled day(s).
- High Schools – vision and hearing screenings referrals are usually conducted by School District Nurses assigned to the school.
- Screening Results – Screening results should be entered into Synergy by the School Health Worker, Nurse or designated employee
Responsibilities of Student and Family Services Division
