WHAT: The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) will be completed by randomly selected classrooms in grades 6-12 in every K-8, middle and high school. The list of classrooms will be sent to the principal of each school along with instructions.
WHEN: October 11 - December 2, 2022
- October 11 -21: Distribute family consent forms as soon as they arrive at your school (they will be sent to school sites during the week of 10/3). Randomly chosen classrooms will distribute the consent forms to their students to bring home to families.
- November (please note the Fall Break holiday): Implement the online survey (schedule any time in November - each teacher can pick the date that works for them.
WHY:
YRBS was developed by the Division of Adolescent and School Health of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to monitor priority health risk behaviors that contribute to the leading cause of death, disability, and social problems among youth in the United States. The survey was developed to:
- determine the prevalence of health risk behaviors
- assess whether health risk behaviors increase, decrease or stay the same over time.
These behaviors include violence and unintentional injuries, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual behaviors, mental health, weight management and dietary behaviors, and physical activity.
YRBS data offers the SFUSD valuable insight into the health and wellbeing of all students that helps inform the development of programs and services such as, Health Education, LGBTQ+ Student Services, Wellness services and more.
NEXT STEPS: Principals will be sent a package that includes the teacher's name and class so the principal just needs to make sure the teacher receives their package. The package will include:
- Family consent forms:
- Active Consent (6th grade) - students cannot take the survey until the active consent form is returned by family
- Passive Consent (7th -12th grade) - only returned if family does not want their student to take the survey
- Instructions for how teachers will implement the online survey
