Announcement Message
Caregivers hold the right to opt their student(s) out of puberty and sexual health content. What does this mean?
- Caregivers CAN opt their student(s) out of any instruction regarding content about the body (e.g. puberty, reproduction, condoms, STIs & HIV/AIDS).
- Caregivers CANNOT opt their student(s) out of learning about LGBTQ+ identities or community (e.g. gender and sexuality diversity, pronouns, histories, family diversity) - per CA Ed Code SB48.
SFUSD affirms a caregiver’s right to opt their student out of sexual health education content and notifies parents annually of their rights in the Student & Family Handbook. Additionally, some schools may notify parents two weeks in advance of puberty or sexual health lessons.
- Caregivers may submit their opt-out request, in writing, to their child’s teacher of health education.
- Students 12 years old or older have the right to override this opt-out, if they wish.
