Announcement Message
SFUSD is committed to providing translation (written) and interpretation (oral) services to all families. Please review the following as you prepare to welcome families back to school:
- Guidelines for Translation of Essential Information
- Guidelines for Interpretation
- “I speak” flyer to post near the staffed entrance area for families in need of interpretation to easily communicate which language they speak.
- LanguageLine instructions for school staff to access for 1:1 communication, i.e., parent-teacher conferences or urgent family check-ins.
- Board Policy 5023 (adopted March 1, 2022) provides an outline of district requirements for translation and interpretation services. Please note the following:
- Every effort should be made to translate written materials and provide them to parents/guardians in advance of meetings, especially for complex documents such as Individualized Education Plan assessments, which require time for parents/guardians to read and understand in order to participate fully in an IEP meeting. Translation requests for IEPs must be submitted at least two weeks in advance.
- Interpretation may be either simultaneous or consecutive; if interpretation is consecutive, the meeting time should be extended to allow for consecutive interpretation, which usually requires approximately double the time.
- Staff request forms for translation and interpretation services are posted here.
