Pathway to Teaching is SFUSD’s internal teacher preparation program that prepares candidates for a successful career as a teacher in San Francisco Unified School District. We aim to recruit, select, prepare, support, and retain excellent teachers for SFUSD schools in three credential areas: Multiple Subject, Multiple Subject + Bilingual Spanish Authorization, Education Specialist (Mild/Moderate Disabilities).
What is the Pathway to Teaching Pre-Service Preparation?
The Pathway to Teaching Pre-Service Preparation Program (PSP) is a rigorous and intensive facet of Pathway’s teacher education program for its credential candidates. Our goal is to ground Pathway candidates in the theoretical frameworks, curricula, instructional strategies, culture, and values of SFUSD so that they are well launched for a strong start to the school year. In the PSP Learning Lab, teacher candidates will have the opportunity to practice teaching with the guidance of a SFUSD Teacher Educator.
What You’ll Do
Teacher Educators are experienced and accomplished SFUSD teachers, TSAs, or Administrators who will develop Pathway teacher candidates in the Pathway summer program. Teacher Educators are deeply invested both in the learning of K-5/6-8 students and the learning of teacher candidates, and they are eager to teach both groups in the Learning Lab. As the most significant support for Pathway teachers during pre-service preparation, Teacher Educators will be expected to:
- Serve as the teacher of record for their assigned Pathway to Teaching K-5/6-8 Learning Lab classroom:
- Leading a rich and engaging summer learning environment for K-5/6-8 students
- Modeling high-quality instruction for Pathway teacher candidates
- Utilizing district ELA and Math curricula, materials, and instructional practices
- Engaging in relevant communication, as needed (e.g. parent communication, summer partner inquiries)
- Coach Pathway teacher candidates to demonstrate proficiency in Pathway Core Teacher Practices by:
- Utilizing SFUSD curricula, materials, and instructional practices
- Modeling high-quality instruction for Pathway teacher candidates
- Providing structured opportunities for Pathway candidates to practice teaching
- Providing specific, actionable, real-time feedback to teacher candidates each day
- Facilitating planning and practice sessions which support teachers’ learning of Pathway core teaching practices
- Planning and executing daily coaching experiences based on K-5/6-8 student and teacher candidate performance data
- Leading teacher candidates in analyzing and reflecting upon instruction
- Assess teacher candidate progress and performance using program rubrics
- Collaborate with other Pathway Teacher Educators to plan meaningful preparation activities and norm on teacher performance standards
Teacher Educators will be in classrooms with K-5/6-8 students and teacher candidates from approximately 8am to 12pm. Teacher Educators will be with teacher candidates and fellow Teacher Educators from approximately 1pm to 3pm. (Note: June 6 & 7 there is no K-5/6-8 instruction, only classroom preparation and adult learning).
