Dr. Brad Fogo (SFSU) and Dr. Kyle Beckham (UCB) will help to facilitate the training of new history/social science teachers on approaches to planning for equity rooted in discipline specific practices. Participants will use Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Wiggins and McTighe’s Understanding by Design (UBD), and historical thinking frameworks as a base. This PLC will help to develop new teacher capacity and skill in curriculum design and development towards achieving equity-focused year-long, semester-long, and unit-long visions for their history / social science classrooms.
Participants will…
- Develop and/or enhance facility with backwards design with an equity and inclusion focus;
- Develop and/or enhance facility with the development of pedagogical content knowledge in the history/social studies classroom;
- Develop and/or enhance facility with the integration of historical thinking skills into existing or future curricula with a focus on equity and inclusion;
- Use backwards planning to design more equitable and responsive assessments;
- Brainstorm, develop, and revise a unit idea;
- Work collaboratively with other participants to engage in a cycle of unit feedback and revision grounded in the aims of the workshop series
- This PD opportunity is open for all 1-5 year, secondary H/SS teachers
- The scheduled dates are for Saturdays, April 16, 30 & May 14 and Friday, June
- Each workshop will run for 5 hours
- Participants will be paid per diem (an increased daily rate, which is based on seniority) for their participation.
- It is the expectation that participants take part in each workshop to get the maximum benefit from the experience.
