San Francisco columnist and family advocate Katie Burke has published an interactive book on what it's like to experience San Francisco (and life in general) from a child's perspective: Urban Playground: What Kids Say About Living in San Francisco (April 2020, SparkPress). The book features interviews with 50 children, ages 5-9, on daily life in San Francisco, and each chapter also features strategies and Q&As to help adults converse with the children in their lives.
We currently have 500+ copies of Urban Playground that we are seeking to donate. Learn more about the book here: https://www.katieburkeauthor.com
If you would like to receive a donation, please let us know how many you would like to receive--or, if you would prefer to receive a sample book before confirming, we'd be happy to send!
Email Genesis at barrazachavezg@sfusd.edu by Friday, 5/21/21 to request copies or samples.
Here's some more information:
About Katie Burke: Katie Burke writes a monthly column for The Noe Valley Voice, featuring kids ages 4-12 who live in Noe Valley. Katie has taught creative writing to children and adults in Kenya, South Africa, and San Francisco. Also a family law attorney, Katie's other publications include The L.A. About Urban Playground: Children want to be seen and heard. When we listen, kids in urban centers like San Francisco tell us a lot, like what is fun, boring, meaningful, and scary about the cities they live in. Jump into Urban Playground to find out what kids think about San Francisco. Kids will enjoy the relatable stories, and adults can use the Q&As and strategies at the end of each chapter to learn how to get the kids in their lives talking about and sharing their unique experiences!
