Announcement Message
By the start of the 2024-2025 school year, all SFUSD high school sites will transition to the new English/Language Arts course sequence listed below:
- 9th Grade English: The Ethnic Experience in Literature*
- 10th Grade English: World Literature*
- 11th Grade: American Literature
- 12th Grade English: European/World Literature
* Since 1998, students in SFUSD have been enrolled in “World Literature/English 1” in 9th grade and “The Ethnic Experience in Literature/English 2” in 10th grade. The new course sequence will “swap” these two grades.
The new E/LA course sequence will better align with History/Social Studies course offerings, setting the stage for interdisciplinary collaboration in 9th and 10th grade humanities. Increased collaboration will be possible given the new Ethnic Studies Graduation Requirement adopted last month by the SFUSD Board of Education. Note: The 9th grade “Ethnic Experience in Literature” E/LA course will be a complimentary course to the Ethnic Studies Elective and is not a replacement for it.
More details about and rationale for the new course sequence can be found here.
Professional development supporting the new course sequence will commence in SY 21-22; sample units will be available in SY 22-23. School sites and teachers are encouraged to shift to the new course sequence as soon as possible.
An updated High School E/LA Recommended Reading List aligned to the new course sequence will be available soon. In the meantime, 75 new titles were added by the 2019 Culturally Responsive Literature & Nonfiction Committee using new selection criteria and a consensus decision-making process.
School sites are encouraged to review the new text additions and allocate available funds from site budgets to purchase class sets as they become available for SY 21-22 and beyond.
