The California State Seal of Biliteracy is awarded to high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in one or more languages, in addition to English.
To earn the California State Seal of Biliteracy in 2020-2021, graduating seniors must meet the following requirements:
- Complete all English Language Arts requirements for graduation (40 credits) with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher in those classes
- Demonstrate advanced proficiency in one or more languages other than English through one of the following methods:
- Successful completion of 4th year coursework in a world language, attaining an overall GPA of 3.0 or above in that course
- Score of 3 or above on a world language Advanced Placement exam
- Score of 600 or higher on the SAT II world language examination
- For English learners, earn an overall score of 4 on the ELPAC exam
Please Note the following requirement changes this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
- Coursework earned through distance learning necessitated by the COVID-19 response will count towards requirements, even if students were not awarded a letter grade.
- The standardized English Language Arts assessment requirement is waived for SY 2020-21 due to the interruption of the SBAC for juniors in the spring of 2020.
- If a student did not take the summative ELPAC during the spring of 2020 due to school closures, this requirement may be satisfied by prior ELPAC scores.
Students who did not have the opportunity to take the SAT Subject Matter Exam in a language other than English, can register to take an assessment administered by SFUSD Multilingual Pathways Department in Mandarin, Arabic, Filipino, Korean, or Russian. Interested students should complete this form and we will be doing outreach to students with these home languages. Spanish speakers were offered the opportunity to take the Spanish AP test.
