It’s hard to focus on school when one’s stomach is grumbling. A student might find it harder to be patient or upbeat when they are hungry. For adolescents, breakfast consumption is particularly important, as it is positively associated with academic achievement and improved mental health.
At SFUSD, we want to make sure that all students are set up for academic success. National School Breakfast Week (celebrated March 3-7 this year) is an ideal time to remind families about how we can help.
Did you know that breakfast is offered at no cost to every SFUSD student, every school day? Free meals are part of how we serve the whole child, which is directly tied to one of our SFUSD Guardrails.
Student Nutrition Services has worked hard on the expansion of their breakfast programs through a variety of “Breakfast After the Bell” opportunities across the district. They are working to expand access to breakfast for students by working with administrators at nearly 10 new schools to begin programs such as Breakfast in the Classroom, Grab ‘n’ Go Breakfast, and Second Chance Breakfast. Breakfast menus are available online at sfusd.edu/menus.
What can families do to help? Be sure to encourage your students to have breakfast at school if they miss it at home. Talk about the importance of a healthy breakfast with them.
Also, start to think about summer resources that you might need to keep healthy food habits going. If you’re interested in SUN Bucks (money for summer food), please submit a Multi Purpose Family Income Form to confirm eligibility by March 31, 2025. Using these government funded benefits will NOT hurt your immigration status.
A short video from Student Nutrition Services includes more information and features Kindergarten students at Charles Drew College Preparatory Academy enjoying a nourishing breakfast. I want to take this opportunity to thank the dining and school staff for being there for our students and for fueling their bodies and minds!
