Dear SFUSD Community:
As we head into Fall Break next week, this is a time for being thankful and affirming our values that unite us as a community. We recognize the national election results have led to many emotions among our students, families, and staff. Understanding the impact that this may have on our school communities, the San Francisco Unified School District reiterates our commitment to protecting the rights of our students, families, and staff, and especially those most affected by any upcoming changes in the federal administration.
SFUSD stands by the belief that every child deserves an education, and every family deserves to be treated with respect, dignity, and fairness. We encourage families to review their rights in the SFUSD Student and Family Handbook.
Per the district’s Board Policy 5145.10, we have clear guidelines that safeguard the wellbeing of all of our students. SFUSD is a safe haven for all students regardless of citizenship status. SFUSD, in solidarity with our Board of Education, students, families, staff, labor partners, and communities across the city, and consistent with the City and County’s Sanctuary Ordinance, restates our position that all students have the right to attend school regardless of their immigration status or that of their family members. Please see: Board Resolution No. 74-24A2, “SF Board of Education Commitment to Education of All Immigrant Children and Opposition to Recent ICE Raids” Adopted April 24, 2007” and SF Resolution No. 171-10A1, “Undocumented, Unafraid and United Students” Adopted on May 23, 2017.
Additionally, SFUSD Administrative Regulation 5145.4 affirms transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming students have the right to be addressed by the name and pronoun corresponding to their gender identity as expressed by the student. Students are entitled to have access to the restroom, locker room, and other facilities consistent with their gender identity.
Discrimination of any kind has no place in our community, and the district has explicit policies that prohibit those acts against our students. SFUSD will continue to honor policies that promote learning environments where every student feels valued, heard, and safe.
SFUSD’s focus remains steadfast in creating supportive, inclusive, and engaging learning environments where we all thrive together. Thank you for being part of the SFUSD community. We wish you a safe and restful Fall Break.
