Last year for Latinx Heritage Month, our team visited a few schools for the opportunity to highlight our dining staff and how they've dedicated decades to helping nourish SFUSD students. We wanted to bring both features back again this year to properly highlight the wonderful teams at Buena Vista Horace Mann and Bryant Elementary. Meet Julia and Maria!
Julia works at Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8 School and has worked with Student Nutrition Services for 22 years. Her El Salvadorian heritage makes serving culturally significant meals that much more important, especially as her school serves predominantly Latinx students. Read more about Julia...
"It is very important to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at Bryant Elementary School because 87% of our students come from other Latino countries." - Maria Perez, SNS Dining Staff
Maria has worked at Bryant Elementary for 22 years and has undoubtedly impacted thousands of students with her welcoming presence in the dining space. She understands what it means to newcomer students to have familiar food served by someone who speaks a shared language. Nearly 90% of students who attend Bryant Elementary are Latin American, which Maria feels makes it extra important to celebrate #LatinxHeritageMonth so the students can see their cultures being represented and celebrated. Julia and Maria, both featured for Latinx Heritage Month, are two examples out of many wonderful individuals that brighten our dining spaces every day and help us to serve the whole child!
