Announcement Message

Hello --

Please read the attached welcome back letter from Regina Piper, the new Assistant Superintendent for Special Education Services. The letter is being shared with all families and caregivers of students who receive special education services.

The letter includes important updates about special education programming and resources for the current school year. It acknowledges the staffing issues that have impacted some of our schools and how staffing issues are being addressed to ensure we continue to provide quality instruction and services and ensure that all students continue to make progress on IEP goals. The Special Education department is actively working with our Human Resources Department to address recruitment and staffing issues and is committed to providing timely and accurate information to the community.

We understand that the issues we are currently navigating as a district may be generating concerns and challenges for families and students. While we work to address the staffing issue in the short term and systemically, our Special Education Services team is committed to continuing our work with each of our school principals and their teams to ensure IEP services are provided to all children and to continue to coordinate available support to address pressing student needs.

Our goal is to work together to support each student’s learning. Please do not hesitate to reach out to special education case managers, school Principals or Special Education Supervisor to discuss options and collaborate.  You can contact our Special Education receptionist @ (415) 759-2222, and they will forward your call to the appropriate Special Education Supervisor. If you have additional questions or concerns please contact Julia Martin, our Special Education Ombudsperson at martinj5@sfusd.edu or 415-447-7802.

Sincerely,

Regina Piper

Assistant Superintendent, Special Education Services
