Vision and Hearing Screening Schedule (Grades 1, 4 & 7)

Vision and hearing screening for school age children is required by state law (CA Ed Code, Section 49452). The following children in SFUSD receive vision and hearing screening during the 2023-2024 school year: 

  • Vision Screening: Students in grades 1, 4, and 7
  • Hearing Screening: Students in grades 1 and 4

Parents will receive a letter regarding the screening results and recommended next steps if their child does not pass a screening. Students who passed the screenings will not receive a letter.

If a student is already under the care of a specialist for vision or hearing deficits, OR parents would like to opt out of this mandated screening, they can let their teacher know in writing. 

See the schedule for your school’s screening dates. Please ensure your student brings their glasses to school the day of the screening. Students from one school cannot go to another school site for screenings. There are no make-up dates for missed screenings.
