Dear SFUSD Families,

It is hard to believe that we have less than 2 weeks left in this school year. As we get ready for the summer, I am writing to share a few updates with you.

Graduations

First, I want to congratulate the Class of 2023 as they embark on their next chapter. As a parent of a recent college graduate, I can relate to the immense pride and joy that this milestone brings.

SFUSD is excited to partner again with the City and County of San Francisco on this year’s High School Graduation for All events. We are commemorating the huge milestone of earning a high school diploma for nearly 4,000 graduating SFUSD high school seniors.

Graduation is a special time for students to celebrate the years of hard work that it takes to grow and advance to the next stage in life. As we diligently prepare for high school graduations, we are equally excited to celebrate middle school promotions.

This is a special time to celebrate, not just for graduates, but also for families and friends to appreciate the accomplishments of loved ones. To those participating, I hope you enjoy graduation. Please share a story about the amazing SFUSD grads in your life by using the hashtag #SFUSDgrad on social media.

Student Outcomes & SFUSD Budget

I enjoyed meeting and engaging with parents, caregivers, students, and community members who participated in the recent town halls about SFUSD’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). SFUSD is aligning our budget with the implementation of SFUSD’s Vision Values, Goals, and Guardrails and is revising our LCAP in this year’s budget process to focus on improving student outcomes.

We believe that SFUSD’s resources and activities should benefit student learning. It is important that we invest in system change and behaviors toward our goals to improve third-grade literacy, eighth-grade math, and college and career readiness for SFUSD students.

SFUSD continues to work closely with fiscal experts from the California Department of Education (CDE) to address deficit spending and ensure we can meet our financial obligations. Learn more about our budget update.

Labor Negotiations

I deeply value every SFUSD employee and am immensely grateful for their service to San Francisco students and families. SFUSD is committed to making decisions that support our students' learning and well being, including providing competitive pay for our educators. At the same time, we have to responsibly manage our finances in the long run or be subject to additional state oversight.

As we engage in negotiations with labor partners, SFUSD is committed to a diligent and good-faith effort to reach agreements with our labor unions. We have offered meaningful compensation proposals as well as trying to address concerns around working conditions. While there is still healthy debate about the details, we are looking forward to reaching agreements that reflect our priorities.

Thank you for your continued partnership and engagement in your student’s educational journey. Have a restful and fun-filled summer.

Sincerely,

Dr. Matt Wayne
Superintendent
