Announcement Message

Dear SFUSD Community:

I am reaching out to let you know we are aware of a social media trend that is encouraging violence in schools across America on Friday, Dec. 17. We recognize that any threat of violence, regardless of how it is shared, is cause for concern.

First, please know that we are not aware of any actual threats against any SFUSD school. In addition, all SFUSD schools have security measures and emergency plans in place to keep students and staff safe.

Secondly, it seems that social media posts aimed toward children and youth and encouraging violence or fear of violence, are becoming more prevalent. Please review these resources about how you can support your children as they navigate the online world safely. We strongly encourage you to discuss with your children what they are seeing and hearing on social media.

The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and we strive to create safe and supportive schools for each and every student and staff member. If an emergency ever does occur at a school, we will notify parents as quickly as possible using a variety of means including text, email and phone call. In order to receive urgent messages in as many ways as possible, your child’s school and SFUSD must have your current contact information. Update your information on ParentVUE. Learn more about SFUSD’s safety and emergency plans by visiting Safety & Emergency | SFUSD.

We are in contact with the SF Police Department and will continue to monitor online trends and share any relevant updates with you as needed.

Tomorrow is the last day of school before winter break so I want to also take this opportunity to wish you a safe and restful two weeks, and a wonderful holiday season.

Sincerely,

Dr. Vincent Matthews
Superintendent of Schools
