San Francisco (January 15, 2020) - The San Francisco Board of Education elected its leaders for the 2020 year on Tuesday night. Mark Sanchez, who served as vice president of the Board last year, was elected to serve as president in 2020. Gabriela Lopez was elected to serve as vice president.
Sanchez served on the Board of Education from 2001 to 2009, and was re-elected to the Board in 2016. Previously, he served as principal at SFUSD's Horace Mann Middle School from 2009 to 2011, and Cleveland Elementary School from 2011 to 2017. Prior to that, Sanchez was a teacher in SFUSD and Redwood City.
Sanchez also currently serves as Board representative on the Council of the Great City Schools Board of Directors located in Washington D.C., which is comprised of the nation's 74 largest school districts. Sanchez teaches third grade in Daly City.
“As a longtime educator and advocate for our public schools, I’m honored to lead the SF Board as we continue to make progress toward improving outcomes for our students and supporting our educators,” said President Sanchez. “I’ve seen great strides over the last two decades and we have great strides yet to make, specifically regarding outcomes for our schools’ African American students.”
Vice President Lopez was elected to the Board in 2018. Previously, she taught at Leonard Flynn Elementary School in SFUSD.
The Board of Education is comprised of seven members, elected at large to serve four-year terms.
