SFUSD Celebrates 1,700 African American Honor Roll Students

On Thursday, February 16, the San Francisco Alliance of Black School Educators hosted the 29th Annual African American Honor Roll and 19th Annual Community Awards Celebration at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The event honored over 1,700 San Francisco students with African heritage in grades 3-12 who earned a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. Students with a 4.0 GPA were given special recognition and received ancestral Kente cloths. 

The evening was led by student emcees and featured student vocalists. SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Matt Wayne and Mayor London Breed offered words of encouragement to students and presented the medallions to students, along with members of the San Francisco Board of Education and other local dignitaries. 

Kosi Anibuko, an 8th grader at Alice Fong Yu Alternative School and 4.0 student, was one of the student emcees. She said of the event and her experience, “It was really great. I’m excited to be here, excited to speak for everyone, and excited to help out.”
