San Francisco (June 8, 2022) - Today San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) students begin a variety of summer programs to continue their learning. This year summer learning will take place at 92 school sites and other city sites, with the capacity to serve 17,000 students. Programs are presented in partnership with the City and various community-based organizations and available for grade levels PK-12. This year, summer programs will be primarily in person with some virtual tutoring. 

“We are dedicated to providing students with a wide range of opportunities to continue learning over the summer months,” Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews said. “Just because school is out for summer, it doesn’t mean that learning stops. We encourage students to read, play, connect with their peers and get outside.”

SFUSD will host a variety of summer programs focused on literacy. In collaboration with Springboard Collaborative, the District will co-host five-week courses at six elementary school sites aimed at helping students achieve grade level literacy by 4th grade. Students in the middle school Step Up program will read from a single book and and focus on building a positive community. This year’s “One Book, One Middle School” selection is A Good Kind of Trouble by Lisa Moore Ramee.

The Black Star Rising summer program will return in person at Balboa High School, offering exploration of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) careers and math enrichment for rising 9th graders. Black Star Rising is a cohort-based high school readiness and success program designed to prepare rising African American high school students for STEM careers through direct math and science instruction, career exposure, early college coursework, and an introduction to workplace readiness skills. Students receive this support during the course of a five-week summer program along with case management and quarterly check-ins led by SFUSD staff during the regular school year.  

High school credit recovery courses will continue to be offered in the summer at Lincoln High School and John O’Connell High School. These courses are offered in partnership with City College of San Francisco (CCSF) and offer an opportunity for students to earn high school credits while learning how to navigate a CCSF course. The Summer Academy for Integrated Language Learning (SAILL) offers high school credit recovery along with an intensive English program for newcomer students. Additionally, over 600 high school students will be enrolled in Dual Enrollment classes at CCSF. SFUSD’s College and Career Readiness (CCR) department is offering various paid and unpaid opportunities for work-based learning experiences, with over 800 high school students set to serve in internships this summer. 

To supplement learning for grades PK-5, for the second year in a row, Teacher Created Materials (TCM) backpacks with books and other enrichment materials have been distributed to all elementary school students. The backpacks include reading materials as well as expanded materials in social studies, science, and math. Students in Spanish dual language programs will receive materials in both English and Spanish.

Free Meals for All Youth During Summer

SFUSD’s Student Nutrition Services (SNS) will also welcome youth back into SFUSD cafeterias for school meals during the summer, which was a practice before the COVID-19 pandemic. All meals are free for any youth under 18 (youth do not need to be an SFUSD student) and also available for any student enrolled in SFUSD, even if over 18. Each meal will be served individually, and must be eaten on location at the school. Meals will include a full entree, a side of fresh fruit, vegetables, and optional milk. Offered at select schools, meals will be served to youth regardless of enrollment in a summer program. Find a list of locations serving summer meals at sfusd.edu/schoolfood.

COVID Testing for Students and Staff in Summer Programs

As of Friday, June 3, PCR unmonitored testing is available only at SFUSD summer programs and two central drop off locations. Testing is available to students and staff that are in SFUSD summer programs, which include: SFUSD Extended School Year (ESY), SFUSD Early Ed Programs & Out of School Time (OST), Pathway to Teaching, Step Up MS programs that opted into the Color testing program and Springboard programs.
