SF Board of Education Takes Further Action on COVID-19 Safety Protocols in Schools

San Francisco (November 1, 2021) - The San Francisco Board of Education approved a resolution to take further action related to COVID-19 safety protocols in schools. 

The “Roadmap to COVID Recovery Resolution,” authored by Board President Gabriela Lopez and Commissioner Alison M. Collins, reiterates the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD)’s commitment to implement policies and practices to ensure health and safety protocols are in place at each school in order to reduce student and staff exposure to COVID-19 while maintaining in-person instruction for each and every student that wants it.

All SFUSD schools reopened for in-person learning at the start of the 2021-22 school year and continue to meet public health requirements set forth by the San Francisco Department of Public Health. 

Per district health policies, staff, students, and visitors at schools self-screen for COVID-19 before coming to a district facility or school every day; stay home when sick; wear face masks at all times while indoors, except when eating or drinking; and wash or sanitize hands frequently. All SFUSD employees are required to be fully vaccinated or test weekly. In addition to following DPH guidance for ventilation, SFUSD has purchased portable air cleaners for every classroom, and each school meets or exceeds the requirements for ventilation set forth by public health guidance.

The Roadmap to Recovery resolution directs SFUSD leadership to draft plans assessing current capacity and what is needed from City, State and community partners regarding testing and tracing protocols for staff and students, as well as other areas of increased health and safety protocols related to COVID-19.

“The Board of Education is extremely grateful for all that students, staff and families are doing to ensure our schools are safe places to learn and thrive,” President Lopez said. “This resolution will build upon the work that has been happening, such as vaccination requirements and the availability of COVID testing, improving air quality, supporting schools that have shown an interest in outdoor learning, implementing high quality remote learning options without penalty  — along with requiring a regular written update on these goals.”
