Media Advisory

WHAT
In honor of National School Breakfast Week (March 4-8) and the one millionth breakfast served in the 2018-19 school year, Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews will enjoy breakfast in a classroom alongside students of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Middle School (MLK). The One Millionth Breakfast event is part of a larger series of week-long celebrations aimed at promoting healthy eating habits in our schools.

WHEN/WHERE

Friday, March 8 / 8:25 a.m. - 9:10 a.m.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Middle School / 350 Girard Street

WHY
Hungry students have a difficult time concentrating and getting the most out of their school experience, while students who are properly nourished achieve greater academic success overall, making breakfast crucial during a child’s school day. SFUSD is making it easier for students to enjoy a healthy breakfast by offering breakfast after the bell. Since first offering breakfasts in the classroom in 2017, MLK has increased the number of students eating breakfast at school by 700 percent.

AUDIO/VISUAL

Superintendent Matthews, Board of Education commissioners, Revolution Foods Co-Founder & Chief Innovation Officer Kirsten Tobey, Revolution Foods Executive Chef & Vice President of Culinary Development Cliff Lyles, MLK Principal Michael Essien, teachers and students will be eating breakfast in a classroom. Media availability and interviews will follow.

ABOUT SFUSD STUDENT NUTRITION SERVICES

Student Nutrition Services (SNS) nourishes SFUSD students with quality food that enables them to live healthy lives and thrive (inside and outside) the classroom. More than 7,600 students eat breakfast every day. Instead of just serving breakfast in the cafeteria before the bell, we are working to increase the number of schools that offer Breakfast in the Classroom, Grab and Go Breakfast, and Second Chance Breakfast. At SFUSD, 50 percent of students qualify for Free and Reduced meals and 52 schools serve meals under Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which means every student who attends can eat breakfast and lunch at no cost.
