Students at Dr. William L. Cobb Elementary School will get a head start in their journalism careers with a visit from an award-winning journalist who shares a name with the school. William Cobb (who goes by Jelani Cobb) has been writing for The New Yorker since 2012 and, as a successful journalist and person of color from Queens, serves as a positive role model for students of what success can look like. Named after the first African American principal in SFUSD, Cobb Elementary provides a strong academic program for its students that focuses on the rigor and joy of learning, with a deepening focus on equity.

At least a dozen students and families ride their bikes to Rosa Parks Elementary Schoolevery day and many more walk to school — and this week is no exception. To celebrate the sustainable ways that students get to school each day, special guests includingState Senator Scott Wiener, Supervisor Vallie Brown, SF Board of Education Commissioner Jenny Lam and more will join students and families via a “bike train” on their routes to school on Wednesday morning. Wednesday’s event is part of Bike & Roll to School Week, which is organized by the SF Bicycle Coalition.
