Highlights March 12-15, 2019: Culinary arts students prep for pop-up dinner; Mariachi concert celebrates diversity Link to this section
Students in Ida B. Wells High School’s Heat of the Kitchen culinary arts class will make last-minute preparations to host a collaborative pop-up dinner at the SF War Memorial Green Room. On Wednesday, students will slice potatoes, make rosemary butter, get ready to braise and roast chicken, make dressing for portobello mushrooms, and pick rosemary blossoms from the school garden. At the pop-up dinner Thursday evening, youth participants from Ida B. Wells and other culinary and garden youth groups from SFUSD and the City will come together with industry leaders to make and serve an elegant meal in the signature San Francisco space.

Nearly 300 students and their families will convene at Mission High School on Thursday for the 6th annual ¡Viva el Mariachi! concert to celebrate Mexican heritage and tradition.Student performers from schools including César Chavez Elementary, Dolores Huerta Elementary, Mission Education Center, Bryant Elementary, Everett Middle, Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, and Mission High will share the stage with renowned mariachi Maestro, José Hernández, from Mariachi Sol de México, and dance company Ballet Folklórico Cuicacalli. The concert - hosted by the "official mayor of the Mission," Roberto Hernandez - will feature traditional mariachi music and dance. The purpose of the event is to showcase a culturally relevant arts program that celebrates student diversity.
